5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly written personal memoir, is finally available to an English speaking readership
Terez Mozes was born in Romania in 1919 to a stable and loving jewish family. The family, like the entire Romanian jewish community would be shattered when the Nazi's took control and undertook its systemic destruction beginning with the imposition of restrictive laws and concluding with forcible evacuations to the death camps. In June 1944, Terez and her sister Erzsi were sent to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in German-occupied Poland where they and tens of thousands of others were subjected daily to unspeakable horrors. After being liberated from the death camp in February 1945, the return of Terez and her sister to their homeland would be delayed by widespread confusion as the Russians swept through Eastern Europe crushing Nazi resistance. After internment in numerous Russian camps, the two sisters finally returned to their devastated home town of Oradea, Romania in August 1945. First published in Hungarian in 1993, and re-published in Romanian in 1995, Staying Human Through The Holocaust, a superbly written personal memoir, is finally available to an English speaking readership. A testament to survival under the Nazi's as well as the Russian dominated aftermath, no Holocaust Studies or 20th Century Judaic Studies collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of Staying Human Through The Holocaust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ceaucescu's Children
Very moving and an eye opener to other parts of the world (Romania). The pictures do a lot of the talking. This type of work is what makes people want to volunteer their lives to causes... such as innocent suffering children. I also gave some important history and facts that explained the situation in a truthful way. Excellent!! It will touch your heart!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener to truth
Amazing book. The descriptions are clear and startling. Joan exposes the reason for the thousands of institutionalised children-Ceaucescu and his selfish, dehumanising ways. She shows that these children are beautiful andrequire one thing above all else...love of God and of us who have it in ourability to help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and Objective
This book is a very educated and thoughtful account of the Romanian people and their history, especially in the context of the Romanian language and its development. Illyes also devotes large portions of the book to thehistorical documents which relate the stories of the Romanians and theArchaeology surrounding the pre-Roman people, the Roman conquest and thepost-Roman influences, through the Goths, the Huns and the Hungarians. Thechapters devoted to the Romanian language, however, are of the greatestinterest and present an objective and professed account, justly critical ofboth previously held historical and linguistic opinions of the origins ofthe Romanian people. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A book waiting to be rediscovered!
At first impression, it may seem that the "Athene Palace" is only about the situation in Romania at the beginning of World War II - therefore a very narrow subject. However, this book goes much further and deals with a much wider spectrum of WWII-related issues, especially due to Romania's strategic importance at that time - a time when Germany was, in essence, winningWWII and continued access to the country's oil resources was paramount to the German war effort. Therefore, the setting somewhat resembles that found in a Hollywood script - a place where the Axis and Allies rubbed shoulders and plotted against each other, in a country that itself was struggling with its position between East (taking into account the Ottoman influence dating back centuries) and West (mainly Romania's great desire to be considered a civilized European nation).Read more
