5-0 out of 5 stars Slovak-American
I found this book to be very insightful and well documented.Having done my own research on Slovakia (and Czechoslovakia) during the 20th century, and being the son of a Slovak major general who saved Jews from deportation, fought in the Slovak National Uprising, directly served under President Edvard Benes between 1945 and 1948, and escaped communist Czechoslovakia in 1948 to continue his fight against totalitarianism, I have gained a fairly good grasp and understanding of the events that Slovakia and her people experienced in the 20th century.I have many family members still living in Slovakia with whom I regularly communicate and have visited there on numerous occasions, including during the period of communist rule. From all that I have come to understand about Slovakia's history and present-day struggles, I find that Dr. Cohen's analysis and focus is precise. Her only failure throughout her doctorial thesis is making a connection between Slovakia's long history of foreign occupation and oppression and the passive, pastoral character and nature of her people that has made her an easy victim and target over the centuries. It can be argued that this passive character is a consequence of centuries of external oppression or a manifestation of something deeper that has been at the core of the Slovak character since the 9th century.

While this book is a case study of post-communist Slovakia, it has great relevance for thinking about the Taliban and other such seemingly ideological regimes in other parts of the world. How deep really is the ideology of Muslim fundamentalism? Is it much more opportunistic than we think?Read this fascinating book to help you reflect on these and other questions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended contribution to Romanian studies.
Romania Revisited is the definitive story of journeys made by English travelers to Romania between 1602 and 1941. Alan Ogden interweaves impressions of previous generations of travelers into the witty account of his own explorations made in the summer and winter of 1998. RomaniaRevisited offers a comprehensive and perspicacious review of today'sRomania as it focuses on the heritage and art of the country, as well asOgden's own novel experiences while en route. Illustrated with Ogden'sphotography and helpful maps, Romania Revisited presents a valuable, highlyrecommended contribution to the study of the perception of Romania byEnglish outsiders down through the centuries, and at the same time doesvalued, much appreciated service for visitors to Romania today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Question Title, an Answers Book
An extraordinary book, that can make all of us to think deeper to what we can do that things like those not to happen again... A book that could be written only by someone who lived in the free world and spent enough timein the now-in-transition countries, to understand exactly what happenedthere and what could be done to help these countries. It is very difficultfor people from there to find by themselves the answers to their questions, and it is difficult also for somebody who didn't live there to understandhow communism changed the people's minds. This book has exactly theseanswers, presented in an elegant manner and in an easy to understand way,by study cases. And the question from title has not an easy answer. I livedthere, I didn't like communism and so almost all of the population, butthis still existed for 45 years. The communism destroyed any knowledge orinstinct of freedom and made the people to be afraid of major changes until1989, when the contradictions grew so much that erupted in a popular riot, there where the governance was so blind to accept any change - Romania. Andnow, those people discovered the values of free market and democracy, butthey have also to learn again the rules of the game. The book helped me tounderstand this and to see what it could be done many years ago, when veryfew of us had the courage to predict these events.I recommend this bookto everybody, both for study and personal knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ! The steps and mis-steps, communist to capitalist
This book provides a graphic description of a crumbling communist power and the stumbling steps toward capitalism that followed. The detailed descriptions of real people and their lives under both old and new regimeskeeps the reading interesting. If you've ever wondered why, now thatcommunism is dead these countries can't just pick up the pieces and move onyou should read this book. ... Read more
