More About the Reconquista and Less about El Cid
I was disappointed in this book.I was looking for an Osprey treatment of the wars centered around the late 1000s in Spain with a particular emphasis on the battles and campaigns of El Cid and the monarchs and rulers he served.What I got instead was a boiled down version of a survey course on Spanish history over three centuries and little mention of the Cid (OK, there's *A* plate of him and his death and a couple of other activities are mentioned in the chronology but since he was the lead in the title I had expected more than that).If you are a historian, avoid this.If you are a wargamer, get it only if you need a few of the illustration plates for the period. I don't really feel like it is worth [what] most people ask for it used.Bad Osprey, bad, BAD Osprey!

El Cid and his ilk
Dr. Nicolle's treatment of the Iberian peninsula from the mid 11th century through the final conquest of Granada in 1492. One will come to recognize that there was no monolithic conflict between Muslims and Christians during this period; rather, the majority of combat resulted from constant raiding and squabbles between small states. Let's face it, folks, most of the activity was the theft of livestock! This book may have opened my eyes to the fact that the raiding that took place in the Later Western Empire continued unabated until the Renaissance.Read more

Torquemada was a good man

If you want to learn about the Inquisition(s) don't read this book!
This book is a re-write of all the exaggerations and myths that have accumulated over the centuries, mostly for political and religious reasons.This is no a history book but an example of a kernal of truth twisted into grand legend, in this case the "Black Legend." (Also notice this is not an academic publisher.}
The awful truth
Mr. Arthur Sippo apparently would suppress the awful truth about the Inquisition and its methods. It is hardly 'religious or political prejudice', nor does it 'misrepresent the facts': Whitechapel quotes from historical sources. For those doe-eyed Christians the truth may be painful, but not nearly as painful as the tortures meeted out under the Inquisition.

It should be "Iberia", not "Spain"
Although I found the book very useful and reliable for research of early medieval Iberia, I must emphasize the following: The use of "Spain" to indicate the Iberian Peninsula (and vice-versa) is notcorrect since in our times it refers only to one of the countries locatedthere. Living in the Iberian Peninsula throughout the whole timespancovered by this book there were NOT ONLY the ancestors of the Spanish butalso of the Portuguese people. Everybody knows (and obviously also theauthors of the book) that until the XV century there was NOT a singlecountry named "Spain" (just a series of kingdoms which wouldunite under such name)! Even Portugal, one of the oldest countries inEurope still mantaining its original borders, was not a independent countryuntil the XII century, just three centuries before Spain... ... Read more
