5-0 out of 5 stars A Queen's Closet
All of the books on historical fashion published by the Victoria & Albert Museum are beautiful, and this is no exception. I saw this exhibition while I was in London this summer and I was pleasantly surprised at liking the book because I always assumed that publications wouldn't be able to measure up to seeing the garments in person. Instead I found that the book gives me a chance to appreciate each beautiful garment at my leisure, and read the history about Queen Maud (which gives a context and feeling of `realness' to the clothing). The book features Edwardian coronation gowns (literally, Maud wore one for the coronation of Edward VII, her father), sportswear (riding gowns etc.), and dresses and suits through the late 30's all beautifully photographed and described. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amundsen was funny!
This book was a lot of fun, in a geeky documentary sort of way.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Norwegian Method
Roald Amundsen's "The South Pole" is a detailed, even exhaustive account of his successful 1910-1912 expedition to the South Pole.Amundsen's expedition was the first to reach the South Pole, after failures by other expeditions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Preparedness Leads To Success
In the Foreword, Roland Huntford describes Amundsen's narrative as "all that Scott's is not".How right he is!This a very large book, but nonetheless an easy read.Amundsen relates a fascinating tale of fortune, misfortune, hardship, and ultimately - success. The narrative is detailed, but not overly so.In many places, a dose of humor is weaved in.Complete with numerous photos, maps, and scientific data, this book should be considered one of the great narratives of exploration. The great moral lesson of this tale is that preparedness ultimately leads to success. Is it any wonder that Roald Amundsen and his comrades won the race to the South Pole? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Account of the Norwegian Resistance
"Skis Against The Atom" is the personal account of the experiences of Norwegian resistance fighter Knut Haukelid during the German occupation of Norway 1940-1945.Haukelid was a Norwegian soldier who escaped to Britain in 1940 and was trained and returned to Norway by the British Special Operations Executive.

5-0 out of 5 stars More heroic than Telemark
This book proves that "Heroes of Telemark" is not anexagerration. First hand documentary account of Norvegian underground against Nazis prove during WW II.It is actually very modest account of the coreougeous soldiers to deny Hitler to build atomic bomb. It is somehow overlooked to the one of the reasons of Nazi failure to build the bomb. But thanks to these heroes whom some of them lost their lives for the cause. Even the writing sometimes gets into some details I feel it is necessary for the documentation. I don't hold it against. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutley wonderful!
Linda Hunt should receive a gold medal for this performance. The research required to put together this forgotten story is incredible.Ms Hunt does such a fine job, I actually felt I was there with Helga Estby at times. The courage these women had to cross the country, in thier times is a display of what I think many should appreciate about women. There are many great women that were/are great leaders...Helga is one example. Thanks to Dr. Hunt for a fantastic job of telling this forgotten story.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's really not worth it.
Linda Lawrence Hunt must have had a time machine. She chronicles Helga and Clara Estby's 1896 walk from Washington State to New York City in her 336 page book Bold Spirit. She did so, even though all were unavailable to her.Helga Estby, a Norwegian immigrant, keep many detailed journals during and after her journey, but her family burned them out of spite and shame.Helga Estby walked across America to receive $10,000.She planned to use it to pay off the debts she and her husband Ole and their ten children had accumulated.Or so says Linda Lawrence Hunt.
5-0 out of 5 stars a heroic biography
This is a wonderful story written from the author's investigation into the life of an amazing woman whose story was purposely forgotten by her resentful family. The author makes necessary brave assumptions in an attempt to fill in the gaps of a story that was pieced together as much as possible from Helga Estby's great-great-granddaughter Thelma.Anyone interested in women's literature would enjoy this story of a courageous woman and her daughter treking across America without a man, left to their own devices, and succeeding much to the chagrin of the then-society.Although the promise made to her was ultimately not satisfied, the courage it must have taken these two women to make the unpopular choice of embarking on such a scandalous adventure is worth remembering and certainly worth reading. It is a very empowering story.Kudos to the author as well, as she ranks in my book also among strong women! ... Editorial Review

If this story of espionage and survival were a novel, readers might dismiss the Shackleton-like exploits of its hero as too fantastic to be taken seriously. But respected historianDavid Howarth confirmed the details of Jan Baalsrud's riveting tale. It begins in the spring of 1943, with Norway occupied by the Nazis and the Allies desperate to open the northern sea lanes to Russia. Baalsrud and three compatriots plan to smuggle themselves into their homeland by boat, spend the summer recruiting and training resistance fighters, and launch a surprise attack on a German air base. But he's betrayed shortly after landfall, and a quick fight leaves Baalsrud alone and trapped on a freezing island above the Arctic Circle. He's poorly clothed (one foot is entirely bare), has a head start of only a few hundred yards on his Nazi pursuers, and leaves a trail of blood as he crosses the snow. How he avoids capture and ultimately escapes--revealing that much spoils nothing in this white-knuckle narrative--is astonishing stuff. Baalsrud's feats make the travails inJon Krakauer's Mt. 4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is one of the few storys that make you think that anything is possible. The book is wonderfully writen the only downside is that towards the end of the book it feels like the story is a little repetative. A good read about survival in the arctic during WWII.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare account of WWII escape to Sweden
This is a wonderful story of extraordinary courage. Most of the reviews say this. I was particularly interested to learn about operations in areas that are not well documented in English. The bulk of the story takes place in Norway and I found that very interesting. I have read many World War II escape stories where the goal was Switzerland and a few to Spain. This is the first chance I have had to learn about escapes to Sweeden. This book is highly recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars History -
A great book.Don't miss this one if you enjoy history & stories of survival against all odds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Right Up My Alley
To use an old cliche' this book was right up my alley. It fascinating because it's about "true crime," which is far more intriguing to me than the antics in the Da Vinci Code. The meanderings didn't bother me. I wanted to know about the history of art thievery. Charlie Hill is a great character--flawed, quirky and still believable--a complete mess! I also found the writing well drawn--good vocalbulary--good descriptions. I loved the way he described Charlie as if "a careless ckerk had stapled together pages from several resumes." I found myself smiling as I read this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really interesting subject
This was a book I would not have purchased if I had not heard the author on the radio.I am so glad I did. While the book does jump around a bit, I didn't really find it distracting as the story and Charlie Hill are so fascinating!Even beyond the theft itself, I found myself wanting to know more about Edvard Munch. If you have a chance, read a bio on the artist first and then read this book. It's very interesting to know what Munch was trying to convey in his painting and give more insight as to why the painting is so valuable.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good read, but jumps around
This is a good book that hooks you from the beginning. However, there seems to be a lot of jumping around from topic to topic within chapters and some unnecessarily long descriptions that diverge from the topic at hand, Norway and the theft of The Scream. All in all, it's a decent recommendation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Patriotism and Caring
This is a fascinating account of occupied Norway in WWII. It is a true story of good over evil; of dozens of people risking torture and death, not only to them selves but, to their families. This is an account of true patriotism and caring for a fellow countryman against incredible odds.5-0 out of 5 stars warning, contains spoiler
This remarkable true story will make a lasting impression. Jan Baalsrud was a WWII Norwegian commando trained in Britain for a special sabotage mission in Norway. The mission was preempted by the Germans, and all the commandos were executed except Jan who got away with his big toe shot off. To be caught was a death sentence, and civilians could only help him under penalty of death. Without proper clothing or footware, he waded through icy water, snow and an avalanche for many days with occasional help along the way. For the second half of the journey Jan was too ill to walk and was conveyed by underground members. Frost bite took all his toes, which he cut off himself. He finally made it to a hospital in Sweden.4-0 out of 5 stars Courage beyond comparison
Defiant Courage told the story of one man's struggle to escape the German army during WWII. His story made me feel in complete awe of his determination and the will of the people of Norway to aid him. If he had been caught, anyone helping him would also have been put to death. Each time he turned for help, people didn't hesitate a moment but immediately gave food and clothing to help him escape across the mountains and into Sweden and safety. And exciting read and also a true experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this was a GREAT story
I stumbled on this book in a used book store. It is the amazing story of the author's parents and their life in rural North Dakota. The book has adventures, anecdotes, and gives the reader a real sense of how families existed in the early 20th century. This was a very entertaining story, although perhaps you can't tell from this review. None of us who have read it could put it down, from my 78 year old mom to my sister who is reading it to her 7 year old daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing story about a frontier Mom!
I loved this book. Its a compendium of short pieces about the author's mother, who was a frontier woman with a wonderful outlook on life. I also loved the descriptions of her husband, who had to drive the children through snow, to get to their respective schools, and the descriptions about how the kids were settled in the schoolhouse overnight, while wild mustangs banged against the door. I don't know about you, but I'm not sure I would send my children to a schoolhouse way far away, with food for a week. Can you imagine what they did after school let out... all by themselves? I wanted to hear more about this. The descriptions of quilting are wonderful. It is a great book if you are in the mood to feel cold, hungry, and in North Dakota with the snow beating down upon you. Also if you enjoy descriptions of sumptuous meals at holidays, replete with Norwegian recipes!

4-0 out of 5 stars Memorable
The author is the youngest of six children of hard-working Norwegian-speaking parents, and the account of the struggles her parents went thru is awesome.Sometimes I thought the author indulged in hyperbole, and I would have appreciated a little more exactitude, but it no doubt is true that life during the twenties and thirties in northwestern North Dakota was a hard and demanding one.The first part of this book is the best, as the author relates the fantastic efforts necessary for the kids to be educated. There is a lot of discussion of Norwegian food, and those of you who are of Norwegian descent will gobble that talk up, but for me I could not get too interested in how her mother went to extraordinary lengths to prepare, under primitive conditions, the food she was so good at concocting. There is less talk of the interesting political events during the time than I would have liked.Appam, North Dakota, which was apparently a home town to the family during these years, has, according to my 1958 atlas, a population of 18.I would like to have learned whether it was a bigger place when the author was a child. But the upbeat attitude to her childhood was a real plus for this book--not the dreary catalog of hardship one sometimes gets from depression sagas.I liked this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A new view of a modern master
Preliger writes swiftly and cleanly, though of course much of the book's heft is devoted to reproducing the paintings under question. She is very good at describing and clarifying how narrow our view of Munch has been; we treat him like some kind of haunted Poe or Klimt-like figure, even though the majority of his work has a golden glow like a fairy tale, and is not horror stricken as the early work we associate him with. His painting is smooth and delicate, reminding me of the clear tempera colors we used to paint Easter Eggs with when we were small children, and there is something of the innocence of a child about his mature work; it is as though having undergone the darkness early on, his spirit was allowed to soar later on.Or compare Shakespeare's late romances like The Winter's Tale or Cymbeline with the earlier and heavier problem plays (Measure for Measure) etc.In any case, brava to Elizabeth Preliger for her much needed corrective.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first major exhibition of his works since 1978
Elizabeth Prelinger's After The Scream celebrates the late paintings of Edvard Munich: haunting paintings which also reveal quite a different side of the artist. While his images of people remain striking, he painted a range of subjects and used a brighter approach later in life, and this accompanies the first major exhibition of his works since 1978 - and the first to focus on his later achievements.

5-0 out of 5 stars the unknown munch
munch is an artist who became so well known for an early work ("the scream") that his later work was eclipsed by it. the fact that nearly all of his later works hang in an oslo museum hasn't helped either. so it's a real surprise to browse this exhibition catalog and discover the many beautiful paintings munch created in the half century between "the scream" (1893) and his death (1944).Read more

Editorial Review

On December 14, 1911, the classical age of polar exploration ended when Norway's Roald Amundsen conquered the South Pole. His competitor for the prize, Britain's Robert Scott, arrived one month later--but died on the return with four of his men only 11 miles from their next cache of supplies. But it was Scott, ironically, who became the legend, Britain's heroic failure, "a monument to sheer ambition and bull-headed persistence. His achievement was to perpetuate the romantic myth of the explorer as martyr, and ... to glorify suffering and self-sacrifice as ends in themselves." The world promptly forgot about Amundsen.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The last book on earth...twisted facts, and damn lies
The central theme of this book, (i.e that Captain Scott was a blundering idiot) has been exposed as nonsense by a series of recent and well balanced books written by expolorers such as Ranulph Fiennes and Antarctic researchers such as Susan Solomon, rather than amateur critics. Read "The Worst journey in the World" if you want a proper account of the Terra Nova expedition. But if you really must buy "The Last Place on Earth" then also read Antarctic explorer Ranulph Fiennes "Captain Scott" which exposes it as a lie.

5-0 out of 5 stars his art and his life interwined with fine and steely yarn.
Yeti was fortunate enough to see the Munch exhibit when it was on tour around 1980 and i remember vividly the impact that his paintings had on myself as well as others particularly "The Sick Child". While "The Scream" seems like the showstealer really all of his paintings are as equally profound. This book gives the story and the struggle behind Munch's work in a thoughtful and readable way with alot of research. Now when i gaze at the scream i see a large black raven hovering over and dominating the picture, the bloody face of a suicide gazing from a surrealistic green, and a dark figure from Munch's past dreesed in black on the left border, one Munch would have wanted to forget if he could. Then there is the "red sky",is that a red sky in the morning,"sailor take warning,or a red sky at night,"sailor delight". Seeing as the 2 ships in the harbor appear to be beginning a swirl into a maelstrom, what do you think? Then there is the almost undistinguishable image of the bird,(a stork or crane?) encased in white yellow running through the red sky. The perfect nightmare graphically drawn. Really gives a person something to scream about!! I'm not even an art critic but after reading this book i've taken a new read on Munch's work.Soo enjoy and happy nightmares!!!or maybe the figure on the bridge is screaming in spiritual ecstasy as it appears to be a ghost bathed in light, maybe seeing its true nature despite the negativity. All of this bathed in numerous shades of greens, yellows, reds, blues, and dark shadows. The author said that Munch kept his paintings close to him because they were his children and would only sell a painting out of dire necessity and even then would try to retieve it later.Even the Nazis didn't know what to make of Munch banning his works as decadent art,yet Goebbels himself openly admiring and fascinated by much of Edwards art.Yet Munch was too much the true artist to get involved with politics and although Norway was sympathetic to the Nazis Munch kept his distance from them.It is amazing how when i gaze upon the "Scream" now i can see the motion of the colors, like a dream on Canvas.I never saw any of this until i read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trajectory of the Soul
The power of the book is that it provides a map for the emotional trajectory of Munch's inner life; from hope and excitement to depression and mania.Throughout his life he painted only what was true for him, whether actual events or metaphorical motifs.Munch lived what we see in his paintings. However, Prideaux attempt to validate Munch's images leads to a simplification of details.
5-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to like his art
You don't have to be a fan or "understand" Munch's work to enjoy this book.Edvard Munch was a very interesting and complex (not to mention screwed up) person. His art came from within and at many times, tormented him until he got it onto canvas. This book really gets you inside Munch's world and the influences (none of them good) that inspired him to paint the bizzare things that he did.If you should happen to read this, follow it with "The Rescue Artist" by Edward Dolnick. You won't regret it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Fall of Norway
This paperback edition of Francois Kersaudy's 1987 book "Norway 1940" is a gripping and even emotional account of the fall of Norway.Kersaudy, a French historian, has provided the story from the points of view of the principal British, French, German, and Norwegian participants. The story that emerges is of a military fiasco for the allies, a national catastrophe for the Norwegians, and a costly and ultimately less than useful military conquest for the Germans.
5-0 out of 5 stars Norwegian History: Norway 1940 (World War II)
If you are interested in serious history, especially about Norway and World War II, then this is a book for you. This will give you background information about the war in Norway, so that you will have a better understanding about other Norwegian resistance books such as Silent Patriot, Report from #24, Assault in Norway, Skis Against the Atom, The Shetland Bus, We Die Alone, and The Sledge Patrol.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This book exaggerates the competence of the Germans and the incompetence of their enemies but is otherwise the best book on Norway in 1940. Adam Claasen's book on Luft operations is also worth looking at. Now all we need is an English-language book on the Netherlands as good as this one on Norway. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not That Impressive
Not much on the blitzkrieg, much more on pre-WWII German history leading upto the blitz.A lot of pictures of Hitler, going by the title I thought I would be getting a lot more about Poland and Norway/Denmark.Still, a good basic book, with a few very interesting pictures of the campaigns. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
If you're a travel buff or fantasize about travel, you'll find this tale of Watkins' journey through the mountainous terrain of central Norway a page turner. His descriptions of ladscapes are vivid. Additionally, he aquaints the reader with the people, customs, and foods of the area. In fact, he does a phenomenal job such that if you really get into the book, you'll feel as if you've traveled to central Norway yourself. He carries books by those before him who have already made the journey. He uses previous tales of Norwegian travels to guide his tour. These are his ghosts, i.e. the ones before him. He constantly refers to these previous works, giving the reader a synopsis of previous travels by others in addition to the vivid description of his own account. If you're a sightseer and enjoy the outdoors, you will likely enjoy Watkins' tale. If, on the other hand, you prefer to spend you time indoors and in the city, you might find his tale quite dull. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but I love the outdoors, state and national parks etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Inward Journey
Paul Watkins' "The Fellowship of Ghosts" is equal parts highly readable travelogue and introspective musings as the author hikes and travels through the mountains of Central Norway. The ghosts of the title are earlier, mostly English, authors who wrote about their travels in the mountains of Norway: Watkins travels much of the same ground and notes what has and has not changed. As an American graduate of an English boarding school, the author is in a position to critique his precessors.
3-0 out of 5 stars A trekk through a Nordic Wilderness
I just finished this travel memoir, THE FELLOWSHIP OF GHOSTS by Paul Watkins about his solitary hiking trip through the lesser traveled area of Norway that lies just below Trondheim.I gave it 3 stars in relative to a general audience, but for those who have a genuine interest in this type of trip, it is a definite 5 star find.

3-0 out of 5 stars Picture book of all aspects of Northern War
This is a picture book covering all aspects of the Northern Campaign including the 1939 Russo-Finnish War, the 1940 invasion of Norway, the campaigns in Finland and Karelia from 1941-1944, and all aspects of the naval war in the Barents and Arctic over the same period. As a history of the events and campaigns, this is little more than a brief overview. The topics are so broad and the text so short that only the merest overview is given. All of the information can be found elsewhere, there is virtually nothing new.If you want to know anything about any of the campaigns nominally covered in this work, I strongly recommend that you find other books that are better written and more narrowly focused (such as Trotter's book on the 1939 Winter War or Ziemke's book if you are interested in the Karelia). There are lots of great (and rare) photos in this book, but little more. One thing that really annoyed me about this book was that the authors openly present a strong pro-Soviet bias. This is unacceptable in a scholarly historical publication by two professional historians (both have Ph.D.s).This should have been written with more balance, I can only conclude that this is not a serious work.My rating of three stars is, I believe, generous and I would not disagree with anyone who gave it two. This is a picture book of the Arctic war, and if you are looking for more than this, you will disappointed by this volume. Not recommended for a serious student of the era.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer on the arctic theater in WWII
Hitler's Arctic War is a useful introduction to that theater of WWII.The book starts by covering the Soviet invasion of Finland in 1939.Although this seems odd, given the title, it makes sense since strategically that war was important for later actions in Scandinavia.Next, the invasion of Norway is fairly well-covered, although without a lot of detail.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hitler's Arctic War
I was surprised when I read this book, at the number of errors, inaccuracies, and untruths I found in it. It is painfully apparent that no one with any knowledge of that theater checked this book before it was published.Read more
