Worthwhile but not comprehensive.
The 22 months of Soviet occupation in Eastern Poland and Lithuania is a history little known to western readers. This well researched book provides yet another window into this period. Stalin's occupation was planned with the Nazis and designed to cripple Poland permanently in the same way hecrippled Russia, that is to destroy all "reactionary elements,"primarily Polish but eventually also Jewish, the target being thepolitical, military, academic, professional and business leadership. Thestory of the travails of the territory's Jewish inhabitants is veryinformative albeit somewhat sanitized. Jewish enthusiasm and violence intheir collabortion with the Russians against their non-Jewish fellowcitizens is glossed over. There is, on the other hand, much told of whathappened when the occupiers turned against the Jewish population once theBolshevik's primary goals were met. These were the execution of over 25,000Polish citizens and the deportation to slave labor of over 2 million Polishcitizens where half were starved, frozen or worked to death. Readers whohave a knowledge of history will be unsatisfied by the limited scope of thebook and by the book's failure to take the opportunity to put inter-ethnictensions during the war into perspective. ... Comments after initial orientation to the book
I read about this book in the August 2000 issue of National Georgraphic magazine, and grew very eager to read it. For years I've been searching for ways to explore family roots in Shepitikava, Ukraine, around and prior to1920. This book provides details I would not have found anywhere unless Idid the on site research the author Weiner has done. What a find! Auntsborn in Shepitivka prior to 1920 still live today and will be mesmerized bythe details I will soon point out to them. For that matter, their father,my grandfather, may well be pictured in one 1920 photo of Jewish men inShepetivka at the cemetary's new gate.

At long lasta pathway to our family history in Ukraine
I recently received my copy of this long awaited work by Miriam Weiner.In addition to providing the first tangible inventory of what the regional archives hold, in regard to the history of our Jewish families, this bookgives a wonderful pictorial overview of the area. One which most of uscould only imagine until now.It does so by providing photos of the placesour families inhabited in the past, contrasted, in many instances, with howthose same places appear now.Read more
