5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Witty
I love this play. I love Oscar Wilde. The wit and humor of this play is astounding, and yet at the same time, it is so intelligent. I love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Audio CD is abridged on one CD
I have not listened to this audio CD version. I purchased it and returned it without listening to it.I opened the case and realized that this is an abridged radio play version on one CD. The play itself is delightful. I don't care for abridged versions of most material, certainly not a play that takes less than 90 minutesin its entirety. I urge Amazon to update the catalog entry to indicate that this is abridged. An unabridged version is available from other vendors. Thank-you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Wit
This is an undeniable classic that I've enjoyed seeing over the years in both theatrical and film productions. Upon reading the work, I find that it doesn't suffer in the reading as well. Wilde is likely the most witty person to have ever lived. He claimed he was at least. His works, of course, reflect that genius. In particular, "The Importance of Being Ernest" does. If you're going to experience only one of Wilde's plays, this is the one. The plot is delightfully silly and turns on itself several times. And the word-play is hilarious, and still fresh after more than a century. I'm pretty sure that this play will never grow old. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Long Journey of Byzantium's Tragic but Noble End
Donald Nicol's account of the last 250 years of Byzantine history is accurate, well written and neatly organized. Unlike studies of earlier agesfor the Empire where the Empire and the Arabs ruled the East, EasternMediterranean historyafter the Fourth Crusade can get rather complex andconfusing, as not only the Empire, but the "crusading" Latins, the Islamic nomads, and the Slavic Christian Kingdoms must all beconsidered. A tale that could easily become entangled and confusing for thereader, Nicol superbly narrates the events and provides detailed accountsof the players. He cleverly demonstrates how entrenched the beleaguredByzantines were, with the greedy Italians to the west, the encroachingTurks to the east, the growing Serbian Empire to the north, and thefestering internal decay of Imperial decentralization from within. Yet, theEmpire still produced great leaders like Theodore Laskaris I, John Vatazes,Michael VIII, John Cantacuzene, and perhaps the most tragic of all medievalheroes, Constantine XI Palaeologos, who all, in better times and without somany encoaching powers from the outside, may have saved the Empire fromsuch tragedies. But in addition to this sad tale of Byzantium's fall, Nicolalso narrates the flourishing of Orthodoxy in the Imperial and Slavicworld, as well as the flowering of learning and thought at Mistra, in thelower Peoloponese. This alone, was the spark that triggered the resurganceof knowledge and arts in the Italian Peninsula, less than 100 years afterthe Fall of Constantinople. What many, scholars and readers alike, tend toforget is that Byzantium's lasting legacy lay in its cultural achievementsin the Orthodox Church, as well as providing the materials and teachersthat would reawaken Western Europe into that period of rebirth so commonlyreferred to as the Renaissance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Both fascinating and full of meticulous detail
I bought this, in the US version, for research purposes. It is outstanding for that (it even covers some quite obscure use of Mosquitos on Red Stocking missions)but is also a fascinating and really good read! If only someone would produce an equally good book on the US Pacific war in the air.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - You are there!
Freeman's book is an excellent look at the 8th Air Force in England - from its first arrival in late 1942 to its departure at the end of the war. He writes so well that you actually feel as if you are there, riding along with the crews at 25,000 feet, in the harsh subzero atmosphere. The stories are remarkable - the fighter pilots; the Fortress gunners; the pilots remarkable duties while flying crippled ships - all fascinating. When the last of the planes and crews leave England at the end of the war, you can almost see the tears at this bittersweet end. Definitely recommended. My only complaint:I bought the British version - the font is smaller and as a result, more print is crammed onto a single page as opposed to American books. (But, I'd still buy it again and read it!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Meticulously Researched, Encyclopedic
This is the book to get if you want to really know the activities of the Eighth Air Force during World War II.It covers the Mighty Eighth from its inception all the way through the war.Arranged pretty much chronologically, the book is not a quick read by any means. The tiny print and comprehensive detail would make slow going for someone just trying to get a general overview of the Eighth Air Force. This is a book for the serious aviation history reader.Written by one of England's top authorities on the US Eighth Air Force, Roger Freeman, this book is crammed with excellent photographs and stories of all the major missions and developments in the war.It also has a beautiful color section showing all the planes of the Eighth, with an illustrated example from each bomb group and fighter group. This is followed by a brief unit history on every group. There is another color section on assembly ships, which have always reminded me of rodeo clowns with their gaudy paint jobs. This is followed by a short selection of vintage nose art, an illustrated listing of all the aces of the war, and another illustrated list of Medal of Honor Winners. The index is quite good, though at first a bit confusing as it is broken up according to names, places and aircraft and the listings are very specific (for example, it doesn't work for finding something general such as Switzerland). This is a high quality book, actually more of an oversized book than a standard trade paperback. It has been wonderfully put together. It is a masterpiece, the result of much painstaking research, full of excellent photographs.Anyoone with a serious interest in the Mighty Eighth would find this book to be one of the cornerstones of his or her collection, along with Ian Hawkins' books on Munster and the 95th.I highly recommend it. ... This is a fine book.I grew up in Cleveland and remember the death of Danny Greene. There were a lot of bombings and attempted bombings in the middle 70's. Little did I know that Danny Greene's death was the linchpin to the Mafia nationwide.Rick Porrello's book is a well-researched and well-writen account of how a union local president's death loosened the keystone of the Mafia arch. This would be a great film!

5-0 out of 5 stars Where To Begin
Having read numerous works on the Battle of Britain, I can now advise the reader where to begin: Stephen Bungay's The Most Dangerous Enemy. It will be regarded by WWII enthusiasts as the starting point in one's quest to discover the facts behing this pivotal event. This is the main course after which the accounts of Churchill and those who led Fighter Command and flew with it will be as dessert and coffee. Buy it now and enjoy!

Dr. Sperber unearthed Knute Rockne's personal and athletic department correspondence in the basement of Hesburgh Library and relied heavily upon it to create this insightful account of the times and tenure of Knute Rockne.Anyone who longs for the old days but wants to know what they were really like will find this book fascinating.Over time, the world has forgotten the way the nation mourned the passing of the great coach. It has also forgotten the genius, showman, businessman, and competitor that produced football's greatest record of achievement.5-0 out of 5 stars Shake Down the Thunder
All ND fans should read this book and keep it in their library.4-0 out of 5 stars Lee Marvin Playing The RoleOf George Gipp
SHAKE DOWN THE THUNDER is a scholarly look at a sports phenomenon - the creation and early development of football at Notre Dame to 1941 and the hiring of Frank Leahy as coach. Much of the book is devoted to the politics within the university community among the coaches, administrators and influential alumni. It is also a story about the rise of Notre Dame football during a period when Catholics were striving for more influence politically and more acceptance in general in the United States.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DULL YAWN!
A very basic book, it read like a grade school story guide. There is little in depth or objective analysis here. The author spends far too much time expressing his "huge boulder on his shoulder, as pertains to the English and Unionists." If your an Irish Catholic you may find this mildly engaging? For anyone else especially Protestants, don't waste your time. His more objective brother Frank would have done a more in depth survey without the hyperbole.

4-0 out of 5 stars A storybook, not a history
Stylistically great, this is a highly engaging and readable book. But it's rather basic and will not satisfy the wannabe-scholar of Irish history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Logistics for the Armchair General
It has been said that armchair generals think of strategy, whereas professionals study logistics. If that is true, Martin van Creveld has written a book on logistics for armchair generals.
4-0 out of 5 stars Accountants, Gamblers and Thieves
Studying this book one gets the distinct impression that some of the most acclaimed military men in history were gamblers with a lucky streak or in other words very successful thieves, who solved their own supply problems by stealing it.5-0 out of 5 stars the best book about the history of logistics
Martin Van Creveld provides an interesting overview of how logistics influenced the outcome of miltitary operations. The first part of the book deatils warfare during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the armies had to keep advancing in order in replemish their supplies. If the army stayed in the same area over a large amount of time such as Napoleon's army in Moscow, than the army would run out of supplies. This situation did not change during the Franco-Prussian War in which the Prussian army had to scrounge for food at the outskirts of Paris. All though food remained a problem for the armies there was always a plentiful supply of ammunition since armies of the 18th and 19th centuries expended very little of it. Martin Van Creveld makes some surprising claims in the later part of the book describing twentieth century warfare. Martin Van Creveld believes that the Schlieffen Plan was doomed to failure because of the logistical constraints of the German army. Because most of supplies delivered to the German army were by rail, the desturuction of the railways impeded their advance. Also German planners made no plans to deal with the massive traffic jams in Belgum. The next chapter Van Creveld has an revisionist appraisal of the Germany invasion of Russia in 1941. Van Creveld believes that Germany had the supplies to deal with winter warfare but the inability to transport them across Russia. Due to the difference between German and Russian rail tracks and maintance problems of German engines the supplies never reached the front. Van Creveld strongly criticizes Rommel's handling of the North Africam campaign. Rommel advance to far for his supplies to be replenished. The problem of supply duirng the North African War was that the supplies had to be delivered by trucks that were highly vulnerable to air attack. When Rommel tried to solve the problem by taking Tobruk, he only made matters worse. The ships that arrived at Tobruk were in range of Allied aircraft and as a result sunk. The final Chapter, Van Creveld evaluates Allied operations in Western Europe. Van Creveld believes that Patton's success had to due with the fact that Patton ignored logistic officer's plan for a slow a orderly pace but instead took advantage of the situation to advance quickly. Van Creveld theorizes that Montgomery's narrow front approach could have logistically reached Northwest Germany but were have not captured Berlin. I would highly reccomend this book for anyone who wants a new and interesting perspective about operations during the First and Second World Wars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very courageous
This book has admittedly been promoted by the famous 2002-movie 'The Magdalene Sisters'. However, there inevitably exists a big difference in the way both book and movie treat this extremely sensitive subject. For this reason it's a big mistake to see the book as an extension of the movie.
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, mistitled.
After seeing, and enjoying the film "The Magdalen Sisters" I wanted to find more factual information about the subject. This was the only book available.

Restall's conclusions add nothing to what Tzvetan Todorov has already said in The Conquest of America-which Seven Myths gets wrong in its dismissal of Todorov's crucial point about the role of writing in the Conquest.Merely being able to put information down on paper isn't the issue. What Todorov means is much more complex, and is grounded in evidence from anthropology to neuroscience (e.g., Ong, Goody, Havelock, Panksepp).First, with written words fixed in front of you, you can re-read, check for inconsistencies, compare to other accounts to assess accuracy and consider alternatives, even elaborate. You, in fact, practice thinking skills you have little opportunity to develop unless literate.Restall also sees no reason to prefer an alphabetic system over, say, Aztec pictographs that interpreters used to recall memorized speeches embodying the culture. But only with an alphabet can you unambiguously set down every single thing a person can think; and only then can an idea be fully worked out and fully critiqued.Evidence shows that the way you think when you internalize an alphabetic written language is significantly more abstract, analytical, and adaptable than when you rely primarily on speech.Second, as Restall claims, "disease," "native disunity," "Spanish steel," and "the culture of war," are causes of the Aztec defeat, but, as Todorov rightly argues, they are only the immediate causes.Underlying them is the ability to productively command signs (whether words or behaviors)-an ability that hinges on writing. It's because the Spaniards had an extensive body of written knowledge that they had steel. It's because of Corts' writing-based innovative thinking that he could exploit information about the "native" situation to win allies. It's because of the Aztecs' speech-based tradition-dominated thinking that they didn't see the Spaniards as a dangerous new breed of enemy that needed to be dispatched-long before smallpox arrived with a later expedition-and didn't effectively adapt battle conventions to fight this new, unpredictable enemy.Aztec society, as Todorov emphasizes, was NOT inferior to Spanish society in any absolute way.The Aztecs clearly had a complex and highly successful culture. But, at that moment in history, faced with a new kind of enemy shaped by written language, they did not successfully compete.Restall uncritically dismisses Todorov's argument instead of getting it straight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest
Iconoclastic, restrained and erudite, this outstanding contribution to historical truth was judged by the Economist to be one of the ten best history books of 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underscoring seven key myths and the misconceptions
Seven Myths Of The Spanish Conquest by Matthew Restall (Associate Professor of Latin American History, Women's Studies, and Anthropology, and Director of Latin American Studies, Pennsylvania State University) presents an informed and informative survey of the events of war, dominance, and assimilation associated with the Spanish conquest of the New World and which have all too often been misinterpreted or skewed down through the ages. Underscoring seven key myths and the misconceptions and fallacies surrounding them, Seven Myths Of The Spanish Conquest unravels oversimplified and all too commonly held precepts to show the Spanish Conquest as a far more tangled and complex web of events and motives than popular memory or the remnants of high school textbooks convey. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read"
Memoirs of a 1000 Year Old Woman is a book that should be read by everyone. It details everyday life in Nazi Germany through the eyes of a young girl. Ms. McBride meticulously takes us through her day-to-day activities with careful attention to detail. We see what life was like for the ordinary citizen, caught up in the maelstrom of war.The author relates the problems of living with rationing, bombing raids, restrictions imposed by the government, etc. Ms. McBride's courage, strength, humor, and independence shine through the pages. This book is a wonderful historical record of the times. I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars William Wallace
This goes good with the other book that I have on him William Wallace: Guardiian of Scotland.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Candid Look at a Legend of a Man
This book was a laborious read, as most works of history are. But the information didn't come as a bombardment, it came in morsels amidst a story that the reader wants to know. It is widely believed this is the definitive depiction of Wallace, and it is clear why, it is not solely about the man himself, but about the political climate and the players and the men in power around him.
2-0 out of 5 stars Over my head...
With someone with little background in medieval history this book was well over my head.It felt as if the author assumed the reader to have a basic background on the subject.I do not and was hoping to build one with this book.Obviously I was wrong. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Extremely biased account
It is impossible for me to ignore the impressive amount of scholarship, reasearch, time, thought, and effort that went into this book. Mr. Ives has no doubt done a service to Anne Boleyn Scholars. HOwever, the book is nearly impossible to read. Mr Ive's introduces many ancedotes into his narratives, which he then proceeds to argue are apocryphal, and then sometimes states they could be true after all. This makes it hard to understand his point, especially when he repeateadly uses words like might, perhaps, and maybe. But the worse thing about this book is that ignores, or dismisses other respectable scholarship on his subject matter as, "nonsene." He sometimes presents things as history, which are as a point of fact a matter of scholarly debate, and the footnotes demonstrate that his arguments are not always as sound as he would make them appear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Court Gossip Rehashed
Eric Ives' book is probably the best book I've read that addresses Anne Boleyn's history. I must agree with another reviewer that towards the end of the book, when the author discusses Anne's involvement in religion, arts, etc, that it can seem choppy. The author makes up for this in his excellent assesment of events surrounding Anne's life. This is one of the few books I've read that doesn't simply state court chronicles as fact, since they were often written with preconceived ideas and prejudices. It definitely gives a more balanced view of Anne beyond the normal opinion of her as a power hungry temptress, and events themselves are put into more appropriate historical context, not simply how today's author interprets something. This book can be read by someone beginning to read Tudor history, however I would recommend one reads other books to see the many different points of view that authors, and history, can take, and then form an opinion regarding Anne Boleyn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
This study of Anne Boleyn was not quite what I expected it to be.I did not find it a straightforward biography of this fascinating woman.Rather, the author chose to concentrate on Anne's tastes in, and patronage of, religious reform, art, politics etc.Intense detail was given to these subjects, but there was actually no consistency to the writing, and thus the book seemed "choppy".At times, I felt that I was reading an inventory of her estate after her death, rather then a true biographical book.
