3-0 out of 5 stars A good biography of the Virgin Queen by Tudor Scholar Erickson
Carolly Erickson has done her homework on the Tudors of England and in her 1984 biography of Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603)
4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly reads like a novel ...
I tend to read mostly fiction, but for some reason earlier this year I decided to foray into biographies. This book gives you a peek into Elizabethan life, gives you insight into Elizabeth I's personality, and you learn quite a lot of history, scandals, and rumours-of-the-day along the way.4-0 out of 5 stars First Elizabeth a reading pleasure
The major difference in "The First Elizabeth" by Carolly Erickson and "The Life of Elizabeth I" by Alison Weir is stylistic. Both women are thoroughly versed in the life of their royal subject, and obviously enthusiastic about her as well.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars come again?
This book and its various companion volumes are edited by Ivan van Sertima, a particularly extreme Afro-centrist. Now, I'm not against historians unearthing early (or late) African presences in Europe. Such a book could indeed be very illuminating. If no such books exist, Black scholars should write them. Or White scholars, for that matter.
5-0 out of 5 stars How Racists Never Want to Admit Africa Was Diverse
To the person who asked the simplistic question on why Europeans, during and after the slave trade, only found 'primitive' cultures with 'no technology' I say this:
5-0 out of 5 stars Mutatis mutandis
I've read this book along with Ancient and Modern Nigerians, and I think the sister did a great job. The last reviewer doesn't know what he is talking about and he needs to do his homework. Any true historian, which he is not, would know that Europeans were in Africa for a long period of time before slavery. Remember, it was Europeans (White people)who were the original White KNIGHTS of Africa!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Verdict
Cornwell presents a good case, although not without flaws, for whom she believes the killer to be.This book took a lot of criticism when it was first released, but it is very well researched and documented.Definitely worth the read by any true crime fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Case Open
This book is a classic instance of someone wanting the evidence to fit a predetermined "proof". Still, the book is an interesting read. I would recommend that readers interested in Jack the Ripper read Philip Carraher's "The Adventure of the New York Ripper. In that book Jack has gone from London to New York City to kill again. While it's a work of fiction, the underlying "Ripper" facts are accurate and the analysis of the Ripper's London crimes quite good. Also the conclusion seems at least supportable under the facts and circumstances surrounding Jack the Ripper's crimes. It might be that Carraher comes closer to "solving" the Ripper crimes than does Cornwell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Soldier's Practiced Eye
Col. Snook provides an in depth view of the battle at Isandlwana largely from a British/European perspective and does it masterfully. I am adding my review to others on Amazon and will not belabor the points well made by other reviewers. If you are interested in the Zulu wars from a tactical perspective (thus from a soldier's perspective), THIS IS THE BOOK TO BUY. I know Donald Morris and respect his work, THE WASHING OF THE SPEARS. Donald is not perfect and he made mistakes in his account of the battle and his drum has been beaten by others in their accounts. Col. Snook sets things straight. I attribute this to Col. Snook's soldier's eye for terrain and logical battlefield progressions. Col. Snook was a soldier and Donald Morris was a member of the American Intelligence Community. It's telling in their writings. ---oh, just buy the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This is everything a military history book should be. This fantastic book, written by a serving British officer, Lt. Col. Mike Snook, tells the story of the battle of Islandlwana. Col. Snook calls on a plethora of sources, including his own training and experience, to tell the story of the opening battle in the Zulu war where the British lost 1200 men in an utter defeat.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid analysis from a military professional
Lt. Col. Mike Snook's account of Isandlwana stands as a solidly researched, solidly written reconstruction of one of the most famous battles of the Victorian British Army."The Secrets of Isaldlwana Revealed" subtitle is perhaps a publisher's effort to generate cover interest, as Snook's book really does not say much startlingly new about the battle. It might be called a Post-Revisionist history, rejecting those works of recent years that questioned the courage and competence of the British soldiers who fought and died at Isandlwana (Snook is particularly disdainful of those writers who challenge the appropriateness of the award of the Victoria Cross to Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill for their effort to save the battalion colors.)Although Snook certainly gives the Zulus credit for their bravery and skill, he assigns chief blame for the disaster to Lord Chelmsford (for setting up the whole situation) and to Lt. Col. Durnford (for tactical errors and poor leadership). It might be argued that Snook's service in the successor regiment to the 24th has led him to give a "free pass" to Col. Pulleine, as the author seems to find nothing remiss in that officer's handling of the battle, and in fact Snook vigorously defends Pulleine's actions. And Snook has nothing but praise for the men and officers of the 24th and the way they fought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great couage under duress
This is a well-written and quite extensively detailed account of the defense at Rorke's Drift by a habdful of British soldiers against thousands on Zulu warriors fresh from their victory at Isandlwana. It recounts the actions taken by the leading officers, and the defenses that were quickly erected (and just in time) before the attacks began. This action was covered in the movie "Zulu", and the author does point out where book and cinema differ. He is obviously proud of the stout defense put on by the "redcoats", but he also praises the Zulus for their courage and persistence in the face of mass rifle fire. Both sides covered themselves with glory, but the British Empire eventually won the "war" that began with their devastating defeat earlier in the same day at the attacks at the Drift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
After reading, and thoroughly enjoying, "How Can Man Die Better", I was prepared to rip through this book with great gusto. No disappointment. It's a fantastic read. I came to the subject with a cursory knowledge (I'd read the Osprey campaign book) and some Hollywood images. I came away with as complete & thorough an understanding as I'm likely to get. While some may disagree with the point of that Lt. Col. Snook's obvious love & respect for his regiment engenders, they couldn't disagree with his clear rendition of the facts, busting of myths, and thorough exploration of the subject from a military point of view. Lt. Col. Snook includes as much of the point of view of the Zulu as he can as well. I wish more military history was written like this. It's just a great and informative read. I hope we can look forward to more books from this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars The fascinating true story of one of the most improbable victories in military history
Written by a serving officer of the Royal Regiment of Wales, formerly the 24th, Like Wolves On The Fold: The Defence Of Rorke's Drift is the fascinating true story of one of the most improbable victories in military history. In January of 1879, a Zulu host attacked a single company of the 24th Regiment of the British Army and a handful of recuperating hospital patients. Retreat was not an option, and the enemy outnumbered the defenders nearly thirty to one. Like Wolves On The Fold shows how sheer bloody-mindedness, as much as any other quality, turned the tables on the Zulus. Like Wolves On The Fold also surveys the remainder of the war, and examines the tragic end of the war's participants. A collection of inset photographs and artwork, most in black and white but a few in color, round out this rousing military history, which pays full respect to both sides in a bloody conflict.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pure delight
I read this entire book with a smile on my face, punctuated by frequent outbursts of laughter. George MacDonald Fraser's memories of his WWII service with the British Commonwealth Army in the Burma campaign was the first of his non-Flashman works I've read. Although it's impossible to really compare two completely different literary genres, I'll just say that "Quartered Safe Out Here" was-in its own unique way- as hilarious, if not more so, than the best of the Flashman novels. The difference is that in the Flashman novels, Fraser's obvious respect for the sacrifices and achievements of the British soldier had to be viewed as a backdrop to the foreground humor while the opposite is true in this work, where the humor plays a supporting role to his tribute, which is explicit.
5-0 out of 5 stars George Fraser's Excellent Recounting Of A Burma Grunt.
This book had been brought to my attention by the author John McKinna ("The Sen-Toku Raid" and others) when it was learned weboth had been combat infantry. And a great recommendation it was. The name of the book was taken from a Rudyard Kipling phrase in "Gunga Din", and outlines the infantryman's life during the final days of WWII as the Black Cat Division pushed down the Burma road towards Rangoon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Memoir of "The Forgotten Army"
George MacDonald Fraser, best known for his Flashman novels, and, in my opinion, one of our best writers, gives us here his nearly fifty-year-old memories of his service in Burma in 1945.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much ado about nothing.
I found the Perfect Prince to be a well written and superbly research book on Perkin Warbeck affair that plagued King Henry VII of England duirng the last decade of the 15th century. The research goes deeply into this blond pretender who claims to be Richard, Duke of York who somehow survived his days in the Tower of London while his older brother was murdered. The level of deception proves to be so great that many great monarchs of Europe gave their support of him and many English men great or small gave their support as well as their lives for him.
2-0 out of 5 stars Rambling and incoherent
I am a history buff and an avid reader of anything written about the Wars of the Roses, and in particular, anything written about Richard III and the mystery of the Princes in the Tower. This book, however, was hard to finish. The narrative style is so rambling and incoherent that it is difficult to follow. Facts, dates, and quotes are muddled, sentance structure is meandering and the author never seems able to make a point. How this book got past a copy editor, I'll never figure out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book
If you like real mysteries and have a taste for all the problematical aspects of real history and research, this is an incredible, masterful book. It is one of the most satisfying books I have ever read - satisfying on many levels and in many ways.

4-0 out of 5 stars War ain't no picnic.
Fussell attempts to capture what it was like being a combat soldier during WW II. He stresses the horror of the real thing as compared to the heroic, sanitized version that most people like to talk about. His tone is bitter, though, and also pro-British at the expense of the American soldiers. All of this, I think, is meant to shock us, but it's so heavy-handed that it doesn't, really. Fussell is a good writer, however, and this book is well written.

One of the best books I have read about the psychology and mindset of soldiers (or for that matter, all people). The best chapter is Chicken S***.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of an actress and a woman
Dorothy Jordan has claimed her part in history in two ways: her talent as a stage actress and her connection with Prince William, the future king of England. Looking back, it is hard to say which gave her higher notoriety, or which lead to her fame. This is a sympathetic but realistic portrayal of this very interesting woman. She is presented as a real person as opposed to a legend, with the shortcomings and endearing qualities of a real individual. The character comes through as being ahead of her time, a financially independent, talented, ambitious, yet compassionate, loyal and honest woman who loved her children, and the men in her life. For those who want to find out more about Mrs Jordan, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The other side of the story,William IV's loss.
I loved this story.I have been reading books on the Hanoverian dynasty in Britain. This book is one of the few that gives the other side of the story of the Duke of Clarence (William IV).It is also the only book that gives us a little insight into the 10 Fitzclarences (William's children by Dora).William would have been a happy father and husband to Dora if it was for the fact his 2 older brothers would have produced an heir, but once the Princess of Whales died in childbirth, royal duty kicked in and William had to marry and follow the rules, (i.e. Acts of Parliament).Dora was a strong woman and survived hard times in the spot light.I would say leaving here was King William's greatest folly. In my opinion, a love like that would be worth much more than a crown. He had brothers with heirs that could carry on the dynasty (and ultimately did, Duke of Kent's Victoria).Any student of Georgian Britain or the Hanoverian Dynasty, should read this book.

Editorial Review

In 1919, Johan Huizinga revealed in the original version of this book that the ideals, aspirations, and behaviors of humanity in history were dramatically different from those in present day. In Herfsttjj der Middeleeuwen, he recalled the waning years of the Middle Ages--the low countries in northern Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries--and argued against those who claimed that human belief systems remain the same even if contexts change. His account rested not on historical fact, but on the emotions and ambitions of the people as expressed through the art and literature of their culture. Many people treated the book as groundbreaking work, and it was translated into English in 1924. This new translation is a complete, more direct version of the original and allows modern readers a full appreciation of life in an era rarely revisited. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars thought Provoking and Look into 14th century thought.
Every good historian knows enough to understand that every word of accounts of history is loaded with the adgenda of the author and he too knows enough to investigate theories and ideas that are foreign to his own to try to gather more insight into what actually happened. For that reason alone Johan Huizinga's "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" is a worth while book since even though it might truly be loaded with the authors own ideas it is well substantiated by excellent scholarship.Aside from that it is written beautifully with a poetic prose moder historians often forget to include when they publish their works.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Mind of the Middle Ages
In his histroiograhical tour of middle ages scholarship, Norman F. Cantor puts Huiznga in his "outriders" section at the back of the book. While he candidly acknowledges the populairty of the "waning of the middle ages" among undergraduates, he takes issue with Huizinga's scholarship.
5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult but Rewarding
This book is an exercise in the intellectual and social history of a bygone era.Huizinga proposes that one can extract information about the 14th and 15th Centuries in the Low Countries and France from sources other than the wars, the politics of the elite, and elite Church sources that illuminate significant truths about the era. This is not to say that all of these do not appear in the pages of this magisterial effort. They do, but primarily the author looks to other sources for information in an attempt to recreate the context of life during this period. One reader refers to this as the "most hellish book I have ever read," I will assume he is talking about content and not quality. This is a hard book. Most of us are unused to reading intellectual and social histories of bygone eras.It is difficult for us to understand because it demands a mental transition on the part of the reader into a world that does not conform to our experiences and values. This type of history also require a great deal from the historian. However, to denigrate this work as speculative is to miss the point. All historical writing is speculative. The farther the subject is removed from us in time and cultural affinity the more speculative the work may seem. The question ought to be, does this book help enlighten us as to the past and add to our understanding of the era in question?Arcane, old fashioned and rigorous as it may be, Huizinga's book accomplishes its mission with distinction. It remains the greatest source of information on the topic extant in English.Maybe Barbara Tuchman was right, she never said that "A Distant Mirror" was history. ... Giles Milton has provided an excellent, readable story of a part of the slave trade that grew out of the persistent religious war in and around the Mediterranean Sea (a trade that was to continue into the 19th century). While the author only touches on the trade around Algiers and Tunis, he provides an in-depth treatment of the trade in Morocco in the early 18th century, returning over and over to the story of Thomas Pellew captured in 1716 at the age of 11 and enslaved for 23 years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing the depths of the slave trade and its depravity
This great work uses the life of a English subject enslaved by Muslim slave traders and the brutal life he endured at their hands. It shows the irony that at the same time Europeans and North African Muslims were enslaving Black Africans the Europeans were trying to stop the North Africans from enslaving the Europeans. This dispicable trade on whites did not end until after the British Navy put an end to it after 1815. The book does not deal with the British attempts to end the slave trade on black Africans.
4-0 out of 5 stars History Repeats - Islamic Extremists
This is an amazingly interesting book. I couldn't put it down. Myself and many of my friends had no idea this was a part of European/Islamic history. Some feel this isn't for the faint hearted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Survey Treatment
If a reader is seeking a reasonably concise (even at 600+ pages) treatment of the complete arc of the British Empire, this is the best I have come across.Other readers, more familiar with pivital episodes of that drama, should recognize that the work is, after all, a survey and does not purport to describe even the most significant of the empire's turning points (with the exception of India) in great detail. These many pages are a thoroughly enjoyable read for the simple reasons that Author James possesses an obvious command of his subject matter and writes in enviably understandable declarative sentences which should serve as models for other historians. It is interesting to compare and contrast this work with Niall Ferguson's "Empire", an equally readable and somewhat more provocative account of British world hegemony. Both are worth the read, and both provide object lessons regarding the Middle East which are not a little dispiriting at this moment when Israel is ramping up its invasion of Lebanon and Iraq appears inexorably headed toward civil war.Too bad only we history buffs seem to ponder works like these; apparently our political and military leaders don't have time for them, busy as they are fighting the "War on Terror".One can only hope that the lessons they learn in doing so won't be as painful and ultimately destructive of national pride, human and economic resources, and the capacity for doing good in the world as the British experience.
4-0 out of 5 stars Believe it or not, its too short.
It is hard to imagine a seven hundred-plus page book being too short, but here it is.This is one of those rare lengthy tomes that keeps your attention and, which is even rarer, whets your appetite for more.Reading Mr. James' book opens up a wide vista of other books to read:more detailed history of India, the South Pacific, the Spanish Main, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the British Empire
James's account of the British Empire is a great piece of scholarly work for anyone interested in British imperialism/colonialism. This is especially useful for those not wanting to spend time and money on the five volumes Oxford History of the British Empire. Of course the Oxford one is small compared to some of the others out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Well Dressed Child, A WonderfulInsight Into The Past.
This is an awesome book from cover to cover. I was enchanted with the text and the many fabulous pictures and have read it over and over again. I especially loved the Christening section and drooled over the pictures of the many exquisite gowns. I am thrilled to have this beautiful book to add to my antique book collection. I have found the author Anna MacPhail also has an equally superb web site (www.[...].com) which I have started to visit on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a lovely book.
Anna MacPhail's book is a work of art in itself.Every page is glossy photo paper, and only one page has no photos. Each photo is in color, (even the black and whites are sepia toned), and some of the items are priced, giving collectors an idea of value. This book has very littletext, so if visual history is your thing, this book is superb. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Under A Cruel Star & Reflections of Prague
My mother's book, in print since 1973 under various titles, the last being 'Under A Cruel Star', inspired me to write my own side of the story about my lost father, JUDr Rudolf Margolius. Now published and called 'Reflections of Prague: Journeys through the 20th century' it fills gaps in my mother's book provided by further research and historical information, some of which was not available to her and which many readers of her book had asked us for over the years. Hopefully this companion volume provides answers to these questions. I hope you find this book interesting and would welcome your feedback.

5-0 out of 5 stars A mother's undying love for her son; a son's undying love for his mother...
When I finished reading Heda Margolius Kovaly's stunning chronicle of continuous struggle, concentration camp survival, and eventual triumph, I had to stare out my window onto the street below for a long while, watching the people.
5-0 out of 5 stars extraordinary memoir in several languages
I am the English-language publisher of Ms. Kovaly's extraordinary memoir, that is now being read in major universities around the world for an eyewitness view of twentieth century totalitarianism --in this case Nazism and Stalinism -- in Central Europe. This translation has been the basis for the UK, French, German, Dutch and Japanese editions of this book. There are very few books in any language by or about Czech Jewish women. Another excellent one is my wife Helen Epstein's journalistic memoir of her maternal line of Bohemian Jews titled Where She Came From: A Daughter's Search for her Mother's History, which covers the years 1800-1948 in the Czech lands. ...
