1-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible Book
This book deals just with Ancient Greek Grammar. It can be used only as part of a University Course or as part of any teaching process involving a teacher. It is a book for ...professors of Ancient Greek!
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Introduction to Attic Greek
Mastronarde's book is an immensely useful and well-written introduction into Attic Greek. Now, Mastronarde does not bold-face important concepts or provide nice illustrations to guide the reader. However, if you are diligent enough to read the book thoroughly and do the exercises, you will have quite a thorough understanding of this language.
5-0 out of 5 stars More praise, with some additions
I used Mastronarde's book to teach myself Attic Greek several years ago (and _before_ I knew Latin).I was adrift until I bought the ANSWER KEY.Nowadays, Mr. Mastronarde has a *(free) online website* which supplements this textbook, offering among other things versatile electronic flashcards keyed to the units (and is easily findable on Google). Of other textbooks I've seen, I also recommend Hanson and Quinn's "Intensive", which I think is a little stronger with respect to teaching the Subjunctive and the Optative Moods, but less good for solo learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cost of Ethnic Cleansing
This is the best book I have read on the tragic Greek-Turkish "population exchange" of the 1920s. I found the book remarkable for several reasons: One is its organization. Chapters alternate between diplomatic history and human suffering stories, many of them based on interviews with survivors of that era. This has a powerful effect on the reader who sees how people were dying while "diplomats talked." Another is its fairness in discussing the responsibilities of each side. (The official Greek and Turkish positions place all the blame on the other side.) And finally the coverage of the suffering of the Muslims that were sent from Greece to Turkey as part of the "exchange." As the books states on p. 161 "In most cases, the fate of these migrants was not as terrible as that of the Anatolian Christians who fled either in the heat of war, or as a result of forced marches followed by forced embarkations on ships riddled with disease; but the Muslim exodus was bad enough."

5-0 out of 5 stars AP Euro Student
I took AP Euro as a Sophmore. This book was a major factor in me getting a 5 on the test. Its dull a times but with the right teacher this book will do you woneders on the AP test in May. Im takin AP Us now and my book is anecdotal and written in a narrative style. thus its almost impossible to take notes in. This book separated into chapters, some of which pertain to social themes of that particular time, otheres to political and economic. In short if you are looking to get 3 or above on the AP Euro test, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bit convoluted, but still useful
Although the text tends to skip around in regards to dates (one paragraph is on the 1300s, then the next section is back to the 1200s) it is overall a good tool for the European history scholar.

5-0 out of 5 stars To Kagan!
Within my AP Euro class we affectionately referred to this book as Kagan (the first listed author, as compared to McKay our other textbook).I must say the opposite of another review talking comparing this textbook to Bailey's The American Pageant. The concensus I have found now that my grade is studying American is a nostalgia for Kagan as we find Baily to be pretensiously written.Kagan was filledwith memorable yet not onoxious writing. The sort of high quality writing that when you answered a question in class your answer would automatically use the same used as in the textbook without your notice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Often Insightful
This is a very good overview of nationalism.Following other scholars, notably the pioneering work of Carlton Hayes and Hans Kohn in the 1930s, Hobsbawm point of departure is the fact that nationalism in the modern sense is a recent phenomenon, arising prinicipally in the 19th century and often as the produce of state formation in that era.Hobsbawm covers the history of nationalist ideas from the early 19th century onward, describing the evolution of nationalist ideas from their association with liberal political movements to their later association with the right, indeed, the fascist right.Hobsbawm covers also the basic historiography as well. The primary theme is the social construction of nationalism, often as a state mediated process with developing states using nationalist ideas to increase social cohesion.Hobsbawm also points out how nationalist ideas often arise from confrontation with others, an increasingly common experience as 19th and 20th century Europe saw increasing contact with others from differing ethnicities and religions as the world economy promoted large population movements and novel information about others.Written with Hobsbawm's typical combination of broad erudition and solid prose, this is an engaging and instuctive book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hobsbawm places nationalism in its historical context
We ordered this book as a reading for our 'Old Curmudgeons Book Club'. The book club is made up of a small bunch of 'older guys', i.e. in their 50s and 60s. We get together once a month and disucss non-fiction books. We've been doing this for about 15 years now. The book has to have something important to say about the human condition. Since nations and nationalism play such an important role in the 20th and 21st centuries, we thought it important to get a better handle on this.Hobsbawm's book helps us to understand the incredibly short time that nations and nationalisms have played a big role in the human experience. It is essentially a 19th century invention and yet it has become such a part of our thinking - e.g. the notion of the inviolability of national sovereignty, the whole business of being an 'American', Briton, Australian, etc. which is such an important part of self identity. One piece of information I found to be astonishing is the statement that at the time of the founding of modern 'Italy',in the mid 19th century, only 2.5% of the population in the territory now known as Italy spoke Italian.Hobsbawm's book then, helps to put into perspective the whole notion of nation and nationalism and helps us to be a bit more critical and more sceptical (suspicious perhaps) when political leaders appeal in language such as 'My fellow Americans', or 'Canadians believe that...', etc. Oh yeah? (What's America? What's Canada, etc.?It helps us to recall Samuel Johnson's famous and useful phrase 'Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel'.Of course, we can get into debates about the difference between 'nationalism' and 'patriotism' but, for my money, they're pretty much the same thing and both are based on unexamined assumptions.Hobsbawm's book will get you thinking about these issues.
1-0 out of 5 stars Corrupted analysis
You'll never get the straight story about nationalism out of Eric Hobsbawm, who himself appears to try to reconcile his own ethnic identity with the topic.David Pryce-Jones once noted that in Hobsbawm's own autobiography: "he [Hobsbawm] boasts of a visit to Bir Zeit University on the West Bank to display solidarity with the Palestinians. Why Palestinian nationalism is valid, and Jewish nationalism invalid, is something else Hobsbawm fails to analyze and explain. Quite crudely, he approves of nationalism in countries which proclaim themselves Communist and anti-American, like Cuba or Vietnam, while rejecting nationalism in countries which are not Communist and are pro-American, like Israel" ([...], Jan. 3, 2003).

4-0 out of 5 stars As If You Were There With Him
I have read much history, and much about the Great War.Nothing I have ever encountered had the impact of this small volume. The war recored here gravely wounded our civilization, and in these pages you can see that wound at its creation.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution
Many readers have ended their inquiries concerning the First World Warwith diaries by well known authors such as Robert Graves or SiegfriedSassoon.Less well known, but easily at home with more famous Great Waraccounts, Edward Campion Vaughan's work provides an unpolished, but equallyshocking glimpse of the World War. Vaughan's vivid, and thoroughly candidaccount of his experiences as a young lieutenant on the Somme during theFirst World War lacks some flourish -- but the details and travails hedescribes transcend his journeyman style.Vaughan's tools are honesty, realism, and a good hard look at the ordinary cares and hardships of asoldier. There are no elevated themes in this book - no glimpses of libertyor democracy, king or country, no metaphysical questions-- just a 19year-old coping with leadership, war, death, the enemy and duty. That thisbook has even survived into reprint is miraculous considering thereluctance, noted in the preface, of his family to release the manuscript(it was thought it would reflect poorly on the author's reputation that thebook details his increasing resort to drink in the trenches). This is anexcellant book and a valuable contribution to WWI scholarship. ... Editorial Review

"Climate change is the ignored player on the historical stage," writes archeologist Brian Fagan. But it shouldn't be, not if we know what's good for us. We can't judge what future climate change will mean unless we know something about its effects in the past: "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." And Fagan's story of the last thousand years, centered on the "Little Ice Age," reminds us of what we could end up repeating: flood, fire, and famine--acts of God exacerbated by acts of man.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than just talk about the weather
The effect of climate on history is undoubtedly profound, but beyond the last century most of what we know about climate comes from indirect estimates gleamed by measuring tree rings, ice cores and other rare artifacts that trace changes in temperature or moisture. In "The Little Ice Age" these clues are combined with historical records to build an insightful history of European peoples.
4-0 out of 5 stars The havoc caused by climate change
This book describes how climate changes over the past millennium affected humans in Europe and nearby. This time period can be divided into the medieval warm period, the little ice age (roughly from 1300-1850), and the period of global warming. And, wow, will you hear of some really bad weather: summers when the rain almost never stops, sand dunes that move so fast people can barely escape, and glaciers you can see advancing daily.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Changes like the Weather.
Nothing changes like the weather. But sometimes the weather can change a lot -- like the summer of 1300, when the world's temperature suddenly dipped.Norse settlements were wiped out and plague destroyed half the population of Europe. The Thames river froze over in winter, and Hans Brinker could skate the length of Holland. When the "little ice age" ended five hundred years later, the result was another environmental catastrophe that caused the Irish Potato Famine, and millions of deaths. At a time when we are looking for predictions of what future environmental catastrophe might be like, maybe we should be paying more attention to historians. Is our "just in time" civilization robust enough to deal with the surprises of global warming?Fagan delivers modern science and historical details in a delightful package that will give you new respect for mother nature -- and more than a twinge of apprehension about what might lie just over next summer's horizon.-- Auralgo ... Sure, this book has some facts in it, but so does the encyclopedia. I'm not urging anyone to go out and buy a set of those either. This book was very dry reading.I think reading can labels is far more interesting than this book.I'm sure the other readers of this book enjoyed it for the fascination with the facts -- as I am. But to give this book good stars just because he threw in some facts would be an outrage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interrogation Techniques Used on American Airmen During WWII
Having researched the history of the post that was formerly Dulag Luft as it is known. "Auswerstelle West" as it should have been referred to after 1941. I found this book to be extremely helpful. As children we always think of torture when it came to interrogations- the common tv perception. It was refreshing to find that the techniques used were not that much different than those employed by today's law enforcement- no not the TV cops with the physical abuse. I grew up on the post, later a US Army post, and the rumors were rampant.I also find it refreshing to see that the Author, Raymond Toliver, a true historian, who has a passion for the subject, addressed the issues of how prisoners were treated by the allies after the war. This book is a must read for anyone who is serious about researching how allied pilots were treated. It would also serve those who are serving today to see the trickery- craft- used by the interrogors. It was also amazing to learn the types of intelligence collected and how it was collated. 5 stars a must read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Diplomacy and War like Chess
In this volume(and the 3 that will follow) Kagan sets out to write a military/diplomatic history of the Napoleonic period. The first 200 pages give an overview of how the war of the First Coalition came about. Then there are some 100 pages devoted to the french and allied war plans and the rest of the book covers the war itself. This is a work of explanation and interpretation and the focus is on the diplomats and generals who made the important decisions. There is no spotlight on the idiosyncracies of individuals perse ,but only if it is important to explain some decision taken by that person. Likewise the descriptions of battles are explanatory. There is no blood and guts. All in all it is a bit like a game of chess and the best explanatory book i have read about Napoleonic Europe. The author, in contrast to most other books about this time, devotes an equal amount of space to the French and the Allies and is evenhanded in the condemnation or praise he bestows on the belligerents. It is simply not true as an other reviewer has it that this is the old Napoleon as Ogre story all over again.Knowing the author's very rightleaning political views i indeed started reading this book with some trepidation, but was pleasantly suprised that Kagan did'nt let those views cloud his judgement.Repeatedly Kagan stresses that it was'nt Napoleon who wanted this war but Tsar Alexander. Of course you can take exception with the author's interpretation of motives and events but that applies to every thesis. At least Kagan does't parrot every other author and his analysis is based on thorough archival investigation. This is not a book for the novice but if you want to know the ins and outs of Napoleonic Europe, have an analytical bend and value clear and uncluttered prose this is the book for you. Highly recommended. Hats of for Frederick Kagan and counting down to the next volume.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Myth of the Corsican Ogre...
This volume, while interesting in places, is neither brilliant nor monumental, except for its length.
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting thesis
According to Frederick Kagan it was the mistakes made by European nations and not Napoleon's brilliance that lead to France dominating Europe in the first decade of the nineteenth century. First according to Kagan distrust among Britain, Prussia, Austria, and Russia made them form an alliance too late, and in Prussia's case to opt out until the very last moment. Kagan is especially critical of Tsar Alexander I for alienating potential allies by his overly idealistic version of postwar Europe in which both Prussia and Austria would have diminished power in exchange for greater influence of the smaller states in Central Europe. Kagan is also critical of the Austrian leadership for putting too many soldiers in Italy instead of Germany and at General Mack for not retreating from his overextended forces from Ulm. Also Archduke Charles failed to move sufficient forces from Italy to help Mack in Germany. Kagan is especially harsh on Tsar Alexander I for overextending his forces in Italy, around Prussia, and the Balkans, while failing to concentrate them in southern Germany in order to cooperate better with the Austrians. Finally Tsar Alexander I ordered Kutuzov to on the offensive prematurely before the disasterous Austro-Russian defeat at Austerlitz. Although I strongly disagree with Frederick Kagan's personal politics, he does write excellent military history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit dull but nonetheless very informative
There is a fashion among Nelson writers to pick a year or two in Nelson's life and then to write every known thing about him during that time. This is one of those books. Still, it reads well and contains a lot of information (even though it's detail-heavy). I recommend it, but not as strongly as the other new Nelson books out this year (Vincent, Hayward). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Impressionism form another point of view
This is a highly readable, almost a page turner, account of the ten years or so surrounding the rise of Manet's fame (really infamy in the beginning), albeit not his fortune as the French academic school personified by Meissonier is about to disappear, though neither he nor anybody else realizes it until it has already happened

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
I loved this book! Well executed and informative. A definite must read for lovers of art history. More of a secular history book rather than an art history discussion, however, it gives great background and understanding into how politics and the evolution of the world influenced and changed art in late nineteenth century France.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
King showcases a slice of time in French art by introducing readers to the personal lives of those who shaped it while juxtaposing developments in French Art with major shifts in the history, politics, economics of the day.One of the few history writers who, as one reviewer mentioned, "keeps me turning the page."Well done! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD READ!
I originally purchased this book to learn about a sorority I was interested in joining while in undergrad. Although I never joined any sorority in the NPHC, I found this book to be extremely insightful! It is a must have for those persons interested in learning about the history of these organizations and/or thinking about joining one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I thought the book was interesting. It gave a general overview of each organizations, with a little extra emphasis on Alpha Phi Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, but that can be expected, since he is an Alpha and his wife is a Delta. I do, however feel that he leaned too far when he went over what happened in the beginning with Delta and AKA, but that's just my opinion. There are so many different versions out there, each side has their own version, but since no one was there, we don't really know what happened. As one other reviewer stated, the Alpha Kappa Alpha hymn is misquoted. I think that theSigma Gamma Rho sister was a little confused. Under Hattie McDaniel's picture, it clearly states that she was "A prominent member of Sigma Gamma Rho", but the letters AKA are at the bottom of the page, and Sigma Gamma Rho are at the top.
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference

4-0 out of 5 stars Microhistory of the masses
Borne of the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" provides a glimpse into the life of a miller in medieval Italy. No ordinary miller is 'Menocchio', however, as he is inquisitioned for his radical religious philosophies. In a time and place where Catholicism was undoubtedly the religion of Europe, Menocchio harbored unique ideas about religious doctrine, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and man's purpose.Although some of his many ideas contradict others that he had, he was well-read and surprisingly well-educated for a man of his station. As Ginzburg says, though, we must look to the Protestant Reformation and the invention of the printing press as being major catalysts for such learning and religious evolution.Within the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" is most fascinating when we ask the question: Was this an isolated phenonmenon or was this a reflection of many people's views? The answer, I suppose, lies with Menocchio, but there is still much to be gleaned from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, fascinating tale
Description of a miller with an intresting ('modern') cosmological belief whose rebellion in thought is prosecuted by the Taliban of that time, the Roman Catholic Church. Forced to explain his nonAristotelian views (and, if Ginzburg is telling the truth, he responded extremely well to the inquisitors' questions!), the miller outwits his arrogant, narrow-minded judges and so wins the reward of torture and imprisonment, losing his wife, family, everything in the end. Galileo, who had a higher social position and powerful protectors, suffered no worse than house arrest, in comparison.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this book in mind
Anytime you want to tell yourself that the Catholic Church isn't that bad, just keep this book in mind. It is just more proof that the church is the most corrupt institution in the history of time. . .with that in mind. The book is very interesting, it deals with the trial of a smart man at the time who was accused of heresy. So throughout the trial we begin to realize how well read this man is and how well he has developed his ideas. It is a good case study of the life of a common man in 1599. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Eastern front for dummies
Both of my grandparents fought in WWII on the soviet side, so I'm pretty comfortable with the subject. I've read alot of good stuff about Mr. David Glantz from american, german and russian sources(check out battlefield.ru, choose english language option at the top left, awesome site with lots of info on the subject as well as overview of Mr.Glantz books). In any case this effort by Mr.Glantz is not a book and this is surely can't be called an encyclopedia of Eastern front. This is nothing shourt but a Eastern front for dummies. From a man who knows so much on Eastern front and has access to so much information this book is a joke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent compact guide to Eastern Front
The brilliant work, Slaugterhouse, by David Glantz is a one of its kind to give the Russians their rightful due in the Second World War. As Mr. Glantz points out in the book, had it not been for the Eastern Front where the Russians took most of the thrust of the Wehrmacht, the war most likely taken a different course. This hand book is a useful guide to anyone wishing to understand this very most important theater. It took many nations to team together to defeat Germany, Italy and Japan. The Allied bombings in Western Europe, the sea battles in the pacific and in Asia, the North African Campaign, and the campaigns in Western Europe have been given total credit for the victory. Mr. Glantz corrects for this and shows how the Russians would have defeated the Germans on their own merit. The reader can find readily information of significant battles and commanders. It is a great guide to use while visiting the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow. When I was in Moscow the Russians were impressed with this handy book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" for the Eastern Front
Without echoing what others have written, this book is one that will appeal to both the neophytes and the veterans of researching the Eastern Front. It is useful on several levels, and contains a wealth of information that in some cases is newly available in the English language!
