5-0 out of 5 stars Hellish.
I read this book twice ten years ago when it was still in the library. I haven't been able to find a copy since then, but the images of the hellish, alien landscapes that Mr. Goin photographs are still so vivid that to use words "powerful" or "evocative" would tarnish their terrible beauty.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most haunting books you'll ever see
I don't know of any book whose images have stuck with me for so long. "Nuclear Landscapes" is a chilling look at the remnants of America's vast nuclear weapons production and testing. From the Hanford reservation in Washington state to the south Pacific to the deserts of Arizona you will always be aware that while the photos may look serene there's always enough radiation around to at least give you cancer or some other related malady. Peter Goin knew the risk he was taking, but he left a priceless work for all people to look at and become aware of what we've done to many places on Earth with nuclear testing. One would wish that India and Pakistan would take a serious look and realize that they too have places that can never be inhabited. That they also have nuclear landscapes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pictorial history of nuclear waste graveyards and testing
Anyone researching locations on nuclear waste disposal sites or areas used for nuclear testing will find ample material in this book by Peter Goin.If you're looking for images of desolate and abandoned landscapes, this is definitely a great resource. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Look at the Nuclear testing in the Pacific
This book is an interesting look at the nuclear testing the U.S. did in the Pacific Islands. It is a great book when you must write a paper on the subject, because of its understandability.I would recommend that anybodywho wants to know about the horrors that the Islanders went through duringthe testing and the aftermath of testing should take a look at this book. ... The book is fine but you sent it to my cousin in Los Angeles and I haven't received it from him yet!I had previously sent him a book ordered through Amazon.I am sure you will think this is my fault, but I do not agree.I said to send it to the same address as the card holder who is me.I give Amazon an F for this one.Jack Derby

5-0 out of 5 stars quite a story
I found my teenaged daughter reading this book one day, so when she was finished I picked it up...
5-0 out of 5 stars a breath of very fresh air
This book was an eye opener. It makes you wonder why this event that happened so many years ago in the middle of the Pacific has been buried for so long. This is not a cut and dry history, this book is a very readable journey through a culture that is unique. The author lets us know who he is, so it enables the reader to understand the person who is doing the interviews. That was a nice and unexpected touch.I found the book to be thought provoking and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in studying the history of the Pacific. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up
My Dad was there (USS Reclaimer) - swimming in the atoll the day after the blasts, cleaning refuged ships, etc. It's amazing he's still alive. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Absorbing
This is a great mini-coffee table book (get the hardcover if you REALLY dig this stuff!) offering hours of information and photos of the famous atomic bomb tests on naval ships at Bikini Atoll. The 190 page book is broken into nine chapters and has excellent notes on sources. Background information covers the first half of the book while the second is focused on recent dives to many of the famous and lesser known ships that were sunk here. The writing is very informative and the photographs are absolutely haunting, particularly the ones of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga!Several color photos are included in the center. The author pushes no agenda in this book.He merely reports the facts available both "good and bad".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wreck-Diving Nirvana
James Delgado does a very good job of reviewing the sunken ships of Bikini Atoll and telling the story of the 1946 atomic bomb tests.I read this book after diving at Bikini Atoll and found it to be a good treatment of a topic that has received too little attention. As far as wreck diving goes, Bikini Atoll is the best in the world, and my only disappointment with this book is that it does not fill the need for a coffee-table-style photographic survey of the incredible shipwrecks at Bikini. That being said, Delgado's book is a nice compromise between such a coffee table book and the more comprehensive historical treatment in Jonathan Weisgall's superb book on Bikini Atoll. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Errors and biases
What could have been a change-making ethnography is instead an error filled and one sided rant.Barker makes several glaring factual errors that a good editor should have caught, not the readers. She is so clearly biased in favor of the Marshallese (who admittedly were wronged) that she fails to present both sides of the issues and history and she turns readers against her positions in the process. Many important points lose their impact when she lectures us over and over again on what the 'evil' US government ought to give the Marshall Islanders as restitution. Her great knowledge of a unique and interesting people is lost in the political rhetoric. Not a well balanced ethnography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marshall Island struggles onward despite Cold War legacy
Dr. Barker's fascinating work chronicles the efforts of a tiny nation to overcome environmental devastation at the hands of the United States. The challenges faced by the Marshallese people include environmental contamination from carcinogens such as nuclear waste (from American testing of nuclear weapons) and PCBs (from multinational corporations).5-0 out of 5 stars Anthropology in the public interest
Dr. Barker has told a story that most Americans never learn, and our government still tries to hide: that the U.S. tested nuclear weapons with full knowledge that the Marshallese people would be affected by the fallout and associated radiation. Using innovative anthropological oral history and linguistics analysis techniques, Dr. Barker demonstrates how the Marshallese have endured the physical, political, and cultural impacts of the U.S. nuclear weapons testing program on Bikini and Enewetok, and developed institutions and cultural adaptations to advance beyond victim status. A must-read for any serious scholar of the Cold War and its human consequences. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fills in the Details on Forgotten Operations
In Osprey's Campaign series #146, The Marshall Islands 1944, Gordon L. Rottman continues his painstaking effort to detail US Marine operations in the Pacific in the Second World War.As usual, Rottman provides ample information on unit movements, casualties and orders of battle, while avoiding any effort to put the campaign in a human perspective by including first-person accounts or mentioning Medal of Honor recipients. Nevertheless, the Marshall Island campaign of 1944 has faded from sight due to all the attention on D-Day and bigger Pacific actions like Okinawa, so Rottman's effort is not without its merit. By including this operation and all the others that Rottman has written about, Osprey has established a common framework for looking at these largely forgotten campaigns of 1943-1944.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fallout
"Children of the Atomic Bomb" is a disturbing look into the after effects of the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II.In reference to the fallout of radiation, the Marshall Islands incident is also discussed. The author's primary emphasis is placed on the bomb's effects on children, including those still in the womb and those not yet conceived.
4-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly important work
This is the personal and medical memoir of Dr. James Yamazaki, an American of Japanese descent who went to Japan a few years after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Dr. Yamazaki went to study the effects of radiation exposure on the populace, and particularly its effects on children. Dr. Yamazaki spent several years in Nagasaki before returning to the US to continue research on the effects of radiation on children (as well as having a general pediatric practice.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare primary historical source
Island Victory: The Battle Of Kwajalein Atoll by Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall (1900-1977) is a rare primary historical source, written by at-the-time Lieutenant Colonel S. L. A. Marshall at the time of the deadly Pacific fight in World War II. Marshall was a veteran of WW I who would later serve in Korea and Vietnam and become a brigadier general. When the Seventh Infantry Division battled the Japanese across Kwajalein Atoll in February 1944, Marshall was given the official task of creating a written record of the battle. In order to be as accurate as possible, he brought front-line soldiers to a group interview and taped their conversations in order to get as clear an idea as possible. Written accounts of war simply do not get any closer to the actions and feelings of those were there. Island Victory is a highly recommended, "must-read" book for those who study eye-witness WW II accounts, and a core title contribution to World War II studies academic reference collections. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Telling an important story
This book carries the imprint of one of my very favorite publishers: Naval Institute Press.I bought my copy at their bookstore on the campus of the USNA in Annapolis, but it sat unread in my personal library for a couple years. Before reading the book, I read the reviews here at Amazon, and the general tenor of those reviews made me a little apprehensive that the content of Jonathon Weisgall's book might be largely a bitter harangue against the American military, and little else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Startling Revelations from Our Nuclear Past
This thoroughly researched and documented book chronicles one of the most underreported stories of our nuclear past.Utilizing declassified records and wide assortment of sources, Weisgall offers unique insights into the crude mentality of the post-war period, where our own sailors and soldiers became victims of the burgeoning nuclear hysteria. And just as revealing is the callous attitudes toward the native people of Bikini, whose basic human rights were thrashed in the process. If reading this book doesn't leave you with a profound sense of distrust of the military and convinced of the need for more civilian controls, it will at least cause you to doubt the processes and laws that permit such activities and decisions to be made without even lip service to democratic principles. This book is a must read for every thoughtful American.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Look at the Dawn of the Cold War
Jonathan Weisgall has done an incredible job of not only documenting the politics and in-fighting leading up to the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, but doing so in a very readable and compelling style. With the kind of factual back-up and verbal acuity possessed by only the most effective of attorneys (which Weisgall must be, given his success as counsel for the Bikini islanders), Weisgall takes the reader from the hallways of the Pentagon to the decks of the target ships swinging at anchor at Bikini Atoll. His narrative manages to touch on a wide variety of diverse topics -- cold war politics, in-fighting within the military bureaucracy, slipshod planning for radiation emergencies, and the popularization of atomic weaponry -- in a manner that is both entertaining and competent.Read more
