5-0 out of 5 stars why are japanese so evil?
Japan has committed some of the world's worst atrocities in history (nanking massacre, unit 731, batton death march, comfort women, pearl harbor, ect..) and they still refuse to apologize, compensate, or make an accurate history in there textbooks. Why is Japan so cowardly and instead try to make their amends to their victims of the horrible crimes against humanity. No wonder people call Japan a "devil" race.
3-0 out of 5 stars Book Contains Great Facts, but Lame Excuses
The most outstanding attribute of this book is its honest depiction of Japan's atrocities. The description of these horrific onslaughts surpasses similar titles in some portions of the book. 3-0 out of 5 stars OK

2-0 out of 5 stars Too bad this is the authoritative volume on Kauai trails
A trail guide should do two things:
5-0 out of 5 stars Hiking in Kauai
We just returned from a vacation in Kauai and found this book very helpful. We're not hard core hikers but we like to stroll the beaches and wander down a path or two and this book was very helpful in determining which hikes were "at our level" or not.The author is right on with the assessments of levels of difficulty and time it took on the hikes we took.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Up-to-Date
I purchased this book in 1989 and used it then, and again, later in 1994. I now live on the Big Island and can tell you that this book is not up-to-date on the easily accessible beaches. There have been marked changes in the 4WD beaches, also. What was once my Beach Bible, is no longer useful. It WAS a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big Island Fun on Big Island Beaches
My favorite part of this book is how the author reveals what happened to the beach along bayfront in Hilo. The diversion of the waiolama river project removed about half of the beach. If you're wondering what this has to do with a book review, it's in the details.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly a Disappointment
This is my first review. I feel that some of the 'rave reviews' I read for this volume did not adequately describe several flaws that Ifeel need mentioning.
5-0 out of 5 stars More interesting than the fictional accounts
This book is a collection of early documents relating to Fletcher Christian's mutiny against William Bligh in 1789 on the HMS Bounty. The editor claims to have gathered together for the first time "the relevant textsand documents" related to this famous event that has intrigued readers for 200 years. In all, ten documents whose publication dates range from 1790 to 1870 are included. The first four documents make up the body of the book and consist of a series of published statements by William Blight and responses by Edward Christian, Fletcher's brother. Fletcher Christian died on Pitcairn Island and never put his story in print. These four sections are followed by six Appendixes. The first Appendix containsa transcript of Bligh's orders and a botanical description of the breadfruit that the Bounty went to Tahiti to obtain. The remaining five Appendixes are narratives of the lives of those who stayed on the Bounty after the mutiny.5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
What an amazing book.Using the original source materials--Bligh's diary, the transcript of the Bounty Court Martial, Fletcher Christian's brother's defense of the mutineers, and other materials--the Editor R.D. Madison has put together a book which is impossible to put down.Indeed, the book leaves the reader wishing it were twice as long.Madison refuses to take sides in the Bligh v. Christian debate, and lets the record speak for itself. Since the record is contradictory and nobody is unbiased, the effect, in cinematic terms, is more like "Roshomon" than either of the two Bounty movies.William Bligh comes across as an incredibly brave man with an indomitable will--yet he has a tendency to whine, and worse, he stoops to securing affidavits which do not even pass the smell test.Fletcher Christian comes across as a 23-year old hothead who lets the men talk him into leading a mutiny--and can't control the situation after the mutiny.Christian petulantly refuses to have dinner with the Captain on the eve of the mutiny.Clark Gable, he clearly ain't.The moral world of the Bounty is painted entirely in shades of gray; the men of the Bounty are imperfect and all too human.Read more

Mary Broad had a brief moment of celebrity, and this is probably one of the only reasons we know so much about the life and times of not just Broad, but others like her. 2-0 out of 5 stars Cook Lite
I wish I had read the reviews before paying for this. The key word for this edition is ABRIDGED. According to the editor Philip Edward's introduction, only about a third of Cook's/Beaglehole's text is included.

This is a spectacularly interesting journal. Cook was an odd sort, that's for sure. But a genius? I'd certainly say so after reading his often-daily account of his activities. Really neat book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A detailed account of Cook's voyages
This well prepared abridged edition of Captain James Cook's journals is a specialized book of interest to people studying the exploration of the Pacific and/or the British Navy of that time period.Other people might find sections of it dry reading. The book is recommended for oceanography students as the 17th century voyages of exploration formed the basis for later oceanographic cruises.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!!!!
We took this book with us on our honeymoon to Kauai. The recommendations were spot on.However (not the fault of the writers) service on the island is lacking in general. The maps were well done, and easy to use with the mile markers included.I would recommend reading this book BEFORE you leave to understand how the book is laid out.
5-0 out of 5 stars No Better Guidebook Out There
My wife and I were given this as a Christmas gift before we left to spend our Christmas on Kauai. The book was not only detailed with very in depth knowledge of many places throughout Kauai, but it was fun to read. The authors deliver useful information in a way that makes it sound like you are talking to them directly, as if leaning over the fence in your back yard and having them tell you about this great little place they found, or a restaurant that wasn't quite up to snuff. We are going back to Kauai, and before we leave, I am definitely getting the latest and greatest edition because there is just no other wway to experience all of Kauai except by using this excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars definitely recommend this one!
We love the REVEALED guide books. They are written by someone 'in the know' and who shares a lot of details so you can decide what is right for you on your trip. They are very descriptive, covering the island much more completely than any other guide books i have seen, and are very open and honest about what they think is worth the look, and what isn't.How refreshing! Not only that, but the writers are quite funny, so the books are fun to read, as well as very informative in various bits of history, culture, and island lore. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Apologia for Germany's Pacific Empire
The only thing worthy about this book is the title:it truthfully describes what is a neglected area of World War One history: the conquest by Australia, New Zealand and Japan of Germany's various imperial possessions in the South Pacific, notably among them New Guinea and Samoa.Lamentably, however, this book fails even to give a readable description of the military operations.Instead, it foists on the reader the patently implausible thesis that:(1) Germany's rule in the South Pacific was somehow a benign period of cultural enlightenment and empowerment for the natives (anyone familiar with the Kaiser's true racial philosophies, as implemented in East Africa and Namibia, will laugh out loud at this point); and (2) that the allies' - Australia's in particular - maladministered these territories once the German colonists were ousted. The anti-Australian bias drips from every page, as does the dewy-eyed sentimentality towards the ancien (German) regime. To add to which, the entire book is written in politically-correct dirge. Someday someone will write a good book dealing with WW1 in the South Pacific. That day is yet to come.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Report
"The Neglected War" is a unique book that offers an extraordinary look at Germany's South Pacific colonies that no other writer has attempted before. The author gives in-depth perspective of Germancolonization from 1885 to 1919 by the indigenous population, the Europeans, and Australians. He also goes into detail about the political and economicsuperstructure the Germans utilized to maintain their hegemony over theprimarily colonial backwater that consisted of many, tiny islands. Whilethe book is well-written and has excellent portions describing themilitary, political, and economic structure of the Germans in the regionand how it was altered after the war, there are parts that drag and includeunnecessary, preachy passages. Overall, I liked this book and found it veryinformative. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some good material here
Like all anthologies, this is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall it is strong. Even the weaker peices are OK. Some of the essays are just summaries of the history of nonviolent action in some geographical region. Sort of interesting, but I found those pieces to have too much information crammed into too little space. Fortunately, most of the articles are case studies of particular nonviolent campaigns or movements. Some of them are simply narratives--it's not clear what lessons are to be drawn. Most of these case studies analyze the movement or campaign in question in such a way that activists can draw some valuable lessons from them, although in some cases the lessons are left implicit instead of being spelled out, which is kind of annoying. These lessons include both ideas on the application of nonviolent tactics and examinations about how these tactics have diffused from one group or region to another. Finally, there are a few more theoretical pieces, including the conclusion by Zunes and Kurtz, which I thought was the best thing in the book. They critique much nonviolent theory as being overly voluntarist--focusing too much on what social activists do and not enough on how the social and political contexts they are operating create different opportunities and constraints. Zunes and Kurtz argue for a balanced approach that analyzes systems of power and tries to understand how nonviolent activists can best put pressure on them, which is going to differ immensely depending on the larger context. Zunes and Kurtz also examine why nonviolent tactics have increasingly come to be favored over armed struggle--but also the ways in which nonviolent activists have needed to continually innovate as governments have gotten wise and adopted effective means of diffusing the power of nonviolent activism (means that range from making it easy to get permits for marches to paramilitary death squads, depending on geographical region). 5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of info on the medieval Norse reach across the ocean
This sumptuous and lavishly illustrated volume of 432 large pages, was published by the Smithsonian Institution in 2000 to coincide with the thousandth year, as close as we can reckon, of Leif Erikson's pioneering voyage to North America where he founded an outpost in "Vinland" that was used by subsequent expeditions until finally being abandoned after several skirmishes with the native inhabitants -- this according to the two pertinent surviving sagas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Links to Polynesian Presence in Americas
Childress has uncovered a deep Pacific base for ancient navigators,
2-0 out of 5 stars interesting, but no classic
Good compilation of information (as you can probably judge from the 5-page bibliography), but not much of a leisurely read. Discusses possible origin of the polynesians, ancient ruins found on the said islands, as well aslegends and artifacts passed on through generations. The author manages totouch alot of topics, but as a general interest book, it just doesn't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into early Polynesian Culture
This book takes the reader into the maritime realm of the first seafarers of the Pacific Ocean. Most fascinating of the ancient cith of Mu where the first pan-Pacific maritime university trained sailing fleets to discoverand chart this very ancient part of the world. Delves a little bit intopossible ties with Lemuria and other lost lands of the Pacific. ... Read more
