3-0 out of 5 stars Kavita Nair
I am Indian, I read this book out of sheer curiosity. It made for interesting reading overall.Really, I'm not in a position to comment on what is true or what is not, given that I am a generation removed and was not even born several decades after the partition. It was indeed a very unfortunate event.I have some very good friends that happen to be Pakistani and I cannot see them even remotely as "enemies" at any angle, unlike Musharraff, who categorically refers to India and Indians as "the enemy".My Pakistani friends are just as nice and humane as any of my Indian friends.I thought he is candid at times when referring to memories of his childhood and his family, but often comes across in most of his writing and dealings, as unsophisticated and lacking polish.

In the Line of Fire: A Memoir by Pervez Musharraf
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and Absorbing
First, let me say that most of the negative reviews posted here are by the Indians who don't have the courage to face the truth and couldn't accept that their government told them nothing but lies during the Kargill war.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst writing I've read in a long time
You decide for yourself what you think about Mortenson.I think the subtitle of the book should be "How One Man Became a Dhimmi."
5-0 out of 5 stars Put so simply...
No doubt this story seemed like an inspiring one. The question for me was, could the writer do a good job conveying it? The answer is- yes!! There are no words to describe how this story made me feel. I was moved to tears more than once. It's about time that we had something to read or listen to that speaks to the humanity of the majority of Muslims. Until now it seemed like we were given no option but to lump them all into the "fanatic" category. There was no one to speak up for the rest of the population. The story of the poor village women of Pakistan giving eggs to Greg to honor 9/11 widows was heart-wrenching. The speech by a supreme Shia ruler to a local village after 9/11 was equally gut-wrenching. Thank you to Greg Mortenson for shining a light on the region. His work building schools by working WITH tribal people of Afghanistan and Pakistan is incredibly brave. The effort taken to learn the local languages and customs is phenomenal. Thank you David Oliver Relin for bringing the story to us and for providing so much background information to help round out the story! This book helped fill so many holes in my understanding of the region. What the heck are the Taliban? Why can't Islamabad just take control of its northern region? What drives many people to choose death via "jihad" over life? I am inspired to read and understand even more about the fascinating people of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is America more secure than on 9/11?
Besides being an exciting and courageous mission story, Three Cups of Tea is an effective alternative to Bush's so-called "compassionate conservatism" and "war on terror".

1-0 out of 5 stars Pakistan: Between Mosque And Military
Mr. Haqqani's views about his mother country are very dubious. The only question I have for the author as he served in some very corrupt governments as their partner...What has he done for his home land? Nothing!!! This book in waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistically Real
After listening to the author speak on NPR, I purchased this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military
This is quite simply the best book on Pakistan that has ever been written, for it finally pierces the veil of deception which the Pakistani military has succeeded in drawing over the true nature of its long-term strategy. The book documents in great depth and detail that behind its "deny, lie, smile" foreign policy,Pakistan's military has: 1) Fomented and conducted a vicious insurgency in Kashmir; 2) Supported anti-American jihadist Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and the Taliban to first conquer and now destabilize Afghanistan; 3) Nurtured and manipulated Islamist parties to help destabilize and dismiss elected majorities in the Pakistan parliament; and 4)Used these same Islamist factions as a recruiting base for terrorism directed against India and Afghanistan, creating a threat to the West as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless account of the culmination of India's freedom struggle and the immediate aftermath
I was spellbound by this book and just could not let it go without finishing through. Here is my take:
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read either before or after a visit to India
This is just an amazing read in the same tradition as O Jerusalem written by these same two authors.Very engaging and makes you feel like you were right there.I like the author's attempt at neutrality in telling this amazing story. If you want to understand the history of this era this is a great way to get it! It seems researched well and well documented.
4-0 out of 5 stars Macro view of Indian Freedom
The book starts at Jan 1947 and covers the period till early 1948. Somehow I missed history of Indian freedom. Even though I had it during my schooling. I was too young to be interested in dry history books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first rate book on Afghanistan
Kaplan is an American journalist who made several trips into Afghanistan during the time that the Soviet Union had occupied Afghanistan and was intent on turning Afghanistan into a communist country.
2-0 out of 5 stars zzzzzz...
As a college student, I am required certain books for my history class. The firsthand account books I have read this semester have been very enjoyable (Kaffir Boy & Son of the Revolution). However, even though Soldiers of God is a firsthand account of Robert Kaplan traveling in Afghanistan & Pakistan during the Soviet invasion & occupation, it was one of the most boring books I have ever read.I could barely read 3 pages without beginning to doze off.The action is limited and sporadic and the commentary is less than stellar. If you are looking for another Kaffir Boy this book is not the one to pick.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cohen's Idea of Pakistan
One criticism of the book is that he mentions how the country was overrun with guns, drugs and afghans after the afghan war but fails to mention who supplied the guns and helped organize the drugs, probably because it was his own country. This is an important issue because afghans drugs and guns are the main reason behind the deteriorating security situation in the country today.
4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable analysis and predictions
Its written by a seasoned and established scholar on Pakistan. The book, more analytical in its approach in comparison to other recent works on Pakistan, is a policy oriented discourse which is very valuable. Its much better than Steve cohen's other book on India published a few years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly and insightful work
Cohen forensically describes the Oligarchy that has run Pakistan for its own interests: the Army, the Feudals and the Bureaucracy. This book explains why Pakistan has failed to live up to the lofty ideals of its founders and how it can achive them in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction with photos, illustrations and facts
I was searching for a good book on India, with a historical bent, as a gift for a friend here in the US. This book provides a very good introduction with pictures, illustrations and relevant facts. The book provides a general outline of history and more importantly also introduces the reader to the general mindset & prevailing conditions ("cultural atlas") in India. It also provides some basic information on the states and neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan & Burma.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book!
As an Indian, I'm wary when "outsiders" put together a book on my country, but this book is exceptional. It gives facts and general descriptions of anything and everything when one thinks of India.Lots ofpictures makes it an easy read.Worth every penny. This is the bookteachers in America should use when trying to give an overview on INDIA. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a timeless work
Fredrik Barth's Political Leadership Among Swat Pathans is one of the most beautiful ethnographies I have ever read. He presents a unique and interesting case about the ways in which 'khans' of the Pakhtun lineage play(ed) their roles as the leaders in the Swat valley (now in Pakistan). Barth carefully examins the relationships between the leaders and their subjects who jointly participate in the defence of their resources (the land). The book also gives us a vivid picuture of the adaptive strategies followed by Pathans, which are embedded with their kinship stuructures and occupational divisions. 5-0 out of 5 stars a timeless work
Fredrik Barth's Political Leadership Among Swat Pathans is one of the most beautiful ethnographies I have read. He presents us a unique and interesting case example about the ways in which 'khans' of the Pakhtoun lineage play(ed) their roles as the leaders in the Swat valley (now in Pakistan). Barth carefully shows how do the leaders and their subjects participate in the defence of their resources (the land). Unlike the prevalent anthropological tradition of the time, Barth has emphasized the consequences of individual decisions for the larger social structure of the Usufzai Pathans. He touches every aspect of the Pathan society -from family structure to the social history -while explaining the contexts in which power is excercised by some leaders through both coercion and consensus.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book we needed
We bought a second reference because it's hard to know which plates will help amateurs like us identify the species in a place we've not previously visited. However, with the plates, the maps, and the generally brief, but accurate descriptions, this was the only book we needed to quickly identify the over 100 species we spotted on our trip. The soft cover made it easier to stuff into one of our binocular bags.

5-0 out of 5 stars The birder's companion to India
Going to India? BUY THIS BOOK. Truly a definitive guide to the birds of India, absolutely user-friendly in the field. Accurate slates and distribution diagrams will help you determine, very briskly, the bird you are looking at. This is important in India because there are tons of birds. Morphological and behavioural characteristics are also defined in this intense field guide. Importantly, this is easy to access, it doesn't make you bounce back and forth 3 times from the slate. Pointers on the slate also help you to quickly make distinctions between similar birds. This field guide makes birding fun and an ease. Colourful slates, smart layout, if only all field guides could be this good.

4-0 out of 5 stars At long last...
Finally, a complete, comphrensive FIELD guide to the birds of India! Gone are the days of hauling 2 or 3 hardcover bird books to the subcontinent just to be able to identify relatively common species. The drawings in thisbook are excellent, the descriptions very detailed, and the range maps veryhelpful. My two criticisms are that birders familiar with the common namesin Salim Ali's "The Book of Indian Birds" will be confused withthe revised nomenclature in this guide (based on the Inskipp's IndianChecklist); some changes are relatively minor, while others are sodramatically different (and frankly puzzling) that cross-referencing is achore. The second involves the seperation of many of the range maps fromthe plates and descriptions, sometimes by many pages. This was due to thelarge number of species featured on some plates- there just wasn't enoughroom for the maps also. A better strategy might have been to put them allin the back of the book. But the benefits of this book far outweigh theshortcomings- my next trip to India promises to be more rewarding andproductive bird-wise (as well as easier on my back)due to this excellentand overdue field guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best collections ever
Most of the time I have large problems with huge collections of primary sources such as this too often we get a picture of society from the top down and not the bottom up.Whoever complied this collection did a very good job. There are sources from everywhere the old Mughal Empire, occupying British forces trying to take over India, Gandhi, Jinnah, Nehru, even Bose who is most often overlooked. There are even examples from the untouchables activists. Before I started the course for modern south asian history I didn't even know that there were such activists.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Sources of Indian Tradition is to date the best compilation of primary sources from India's long intellectual, philosophical and religous traditions. It introduces the reader to seminal texts in the Brahmanic tradition, to ethics, metaphysics, and theories of state and society in Jainism and Buddhism, to ethics, treatises on art and culture, political theory and statecraft and philosophical and religious texts in the Hindu classical and popular tradition. It concludes with a look at the Indian Islamic tradition including the writings of Islamic rulers, ulama, sufis etc. Despite some omissions from the compilation (I would have liked a more in depth exploration of Indian epic literature, classical Sanskrit drama and poetry, the Sikh tradition and Urdu poetry), it is readable, engaging, thought provoking and will illuminate your understanding of one of the world's most fascinating civilizations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book on India
India has one of the richest and most intricate cultures in the world. Imagine a book that compiled all the ancient sources of this culture into asingle volume. This book is as close to that ideal as possible.Thisvolume covers India from pre-historic times until the mid 18th century.Itincludes selections from the Vedas and the Upanishads, foundational Hindutexts; selections from important Jain texts; and selections from earlyTheravadan and Mahayanan Buddhist texts. It them embarks on an elaboratediscussion of Hinduism, organized on the four goals of life -- *dharma*,*artha*, *kama*, and *moksha* (the section on *moksha* contains selectionsfrom the *Bhagavad Gita*, other scriptures, and the writings of mystics& saints). The last section of the anthology is a detailed treatmentof the Muslims period in India, from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Overall, this is an invaluable sourcebook for anyone who wants to know moreabout the history of India. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Absorbing, Readable, but Forgettable Book
I bought this book some three years ago and took it on a trip, finishing it over six days. The book is written very well, and journalist in Owen Bennet Jones certainly needs to be commended.
5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing insight into Pakistani politics
This book is without a doubt the best ever book one can find on Pakistani politics. It covers every aspect in detail from the 1999 Coup, the Kashmir Crisis-Kargil, Democracy in Pakistan as well as other internal issues.5-0 out of 5 stars College-level readers will find it involving

5-0 out of 5 stars Considers its pivotal role in world politics
Pakistan is both a terrorist haven, a den of corruption, and the probable battlefront of Islamic terrorists. This report considers its pivotal role in world politics, blending a history of the country through two decades of eyewitness reporting with portraits of its leaders. Pakistan In The Shadow Of Jihad And Afghanistan is an excellent source for any seeking an understanding of the history and politics of modern Pakistan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction based on experience
Much has been written about Pakistan since September 11th.But as Ms. Weaver points out in her wonderful book about the only Islamic Republic in the world, much harm could have been avoided if only we were more aware of this country and its problems BEFORE the terrorist attacks.Weaver's experiences as a journalist in this country form the basis and the strength of this book.Having covered this country for two decades, she provides a depth of experience in tracing the recent social and political ills of this nation. Her basic thesis is simple and seems chillingly accurate given current events. She convincingly states the case that U.S. foreign policy set up the country for much of its woes by at first supporting Islamic violent jihad in Afghanistan in the 80's, then abandoning the country completely after the Soviets withdrew and the Cold War ended. While it would be unfair not to assign some responsibility for their current predicament on the Pakistanis themselves, especially their failure to achieve economic growth and political stability, Ms. Weaver's writings on how the situation in Afghanistan destabilized Pakistan to the point where it is now practically as ungovernable as its neighbor is well taken.5-0 out of 5 stars up close and personal

5-0 out of 5 stars Complex, but very rewarding
I spent an entire week on Meatless Days, having picked it up after reading one of the book's chapters in an anthology of Indian writing. As a teenager, I'd just like to share my views about the book. Do note that it wasn't part of any required reading list, so I wasn't forced to complete it, nothing like that.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Sara Suleri's memoir is a wonderful example of the kind of literary production our faculty memebers should be producing--inspired, original, and compelling. Her non-academic writing, like her literary criticism, moves me to believe there are still people in the academy who understand what it is all about.1-0 out of 5 stars Too academic
This has got to be one of the most difficult books to read. It was like swimming through a river of debris. Now and then there would be some clarity in her prose. Overall, it was way too obtuse for my taste. ... Read more

I have to concur with the first reviewer, this book was a big disappointment.I was looking for a resource that would allow me to identify mammals in the field. This book does not do that.If you have even the most rudimentary knowledge of animals (e.g. you can identify an elephant) then you can probably get by without this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Quite Disappointed
I found this book to be overall pretty disappointing.First off, the illustrations are horrible. They look like children's cartoon drawings. Why don't the editors of mammal-books hire the same artists who do bird guides? The latter are generally really good.3-0 out of 5 stars Good field guide - bad entertainment
This book covers the land mammals of the Indian Subregion or in other words it cover: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. However, it also does exclude the smaller and often inconspicious mammals like baths, schrews, and most rodents. A number of small but often conspicious mammals are included. For instance both squirrels and pikas are included. In total it depicts and describes 106 species in deatail. It starts in the typical manner with an introduction to the region, mammals, and mammal observing. This section is highly usefull to the unexperienced reader, but will probably seem quite borring to most, as it is short and only mentiones the most bassal things. The next fourty pages is devoted to the mammal species themselves. This means that there is 2-3 species per page. About each species the book descibes identification, habitat, range (no range maps!), behavior, diet, breeding, status, and similar species. The text is not for pleasure reading, but it is highly usefull in the field. A thing to remember - not mentioned in the book - is that the status refers to subregion only, not the intire world. An example is the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) which is described as endangered. The next pages are assigned to 12 colour plates with drawings of the mammals. The drawings are not especialy beautiful, but all the important details usefull in identification are remembered. The next 12 plates are devoted to animal tracks. The last third of the book describes 23 national parks/reserves in the region including the famous Chitwan NP and Sunderbars NP. These pages are the highlight of the book. In this part there is a map of each park and a quite thorrow descibtion of acces, accomodation facilities, season to go there, larger mammals of the area etc. Sadly similar chapters in other books have been shown to go quickly out of date. At the end of the book there is a chapter called "futher reading" which obviously seems equal to bibliograpy. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some good material here
Like all anthologies, this is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall it is strong. Even the weaker peices are OK. Some of the essays are just summaries of the history of nonviolent action in some geographical region. Sort of interesting, but I found those pieces to have too much information crammed into too little space. Fortunately, most of the articles are case studies of particular nonviolent campaigns or movements. Some of them are simply narratives--it's not clear what lessons are to be drawn. Most of these case studies analyze the movement or campaign in question in such a way that activists can draw some valuable lessons from them, although in some cases the lessons are left implicit instead of being spelled out, which is kind of annoying. These lessons include both ideas on the application of nonviolent tactics and examinations about how these tactics have diffused from one group or region to another. Finally, there are a few more theoretical pieces, including the conclusion by Zunes and Kurtz, which I thought was the best thing in the book. They critique much nonviolent theory as being overly voluntarist--focusing too much on what social activists do and not enough on how the social and political contexts they are operating create different opportunities and constraints. Zunes and Kurtz argue for a balanced approach that analyzes systems of power and tries to understand how nonviolent activists can best put pressure on them, which is going to differ immensely depending on the larger context. Zunes and Kurtz also examine why nonviolent tactics have increasingly come to be favored over armed struggle--but also the ways in which nonviolent activists have needed to continually innovate as governments have gotten wise and adopted effective means of diffusing the power of nonviolent activism (means that range from making it easy to get permits for marches to paramilitary death squads, depending on geographical region). Overall, this is a valuable source of information on nonviolent movements, what has worked and what hasn't.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some additional information for a good book.
I have read this book, always optimistic in the hope that I will come across even better accounts on this much misunderstood subject, but sadly that is a wish that remains unfulfilled after many long years. Ian Talbot has meticulously documented and provided scholastic information that will otherwise be useful and handy for students and interested readers alike, but I--for one--would like to add through this review, a synopsis of what I feel he has left out. This concerns the crux of what needs to be sorely known about Pakistan's basic realities.
