5-0 out of 5 stars If you visit Burma read this before
This book has quite deservedly collected very favorable reviews and I will not belabor the point. I would like to add that I read this book shortly before a visit to Burma nearly 2 years ago. The insights gained, both political and cultural, were extremely helpful to me during the visit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ulysses springs eternal and from every corner
I liked this book immensely on several levels. As an anthropologist, I found it very interesting to get a Padaung's eye view, written in literate English, of his own background, his childhood in the remote, forested mountains of eastern Burma. The author tells of everything---from the strictures of Roman Catholic missionaries in far parts of Asia, to eating dogs, baby wasps, and snakes (with relish), his grandmother's stories, guardian spirits, a Padaung funeral. The Burmese political climate of the 1960s and `70s merely lurks in the background until the author drops out of a seminary and heads to Mandalay to attend university. While information about various remote peoples is not uncommon, it is usually processed by foreign writers who have visited them.FLGG gives it to you from the horse's mouth.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read on Burma
This is an engrossing memoir. Detailed. Synchs with other things I have read of Burma. I kind of think some of it is a bit, um, self-serving or fictional. A story on steroids. But, with that caveat, enjoy this book and keep it in your Burma collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A pure delight
I read this entire book with a smile on my face, punctuated by frequent outbursts of laughter. George MacDonald Fraser's memories of his WWII service with the British Commonwealth Army in the Burma campaign was the first of his non-Flashman works I've read. Although it's impossible to really compare two completely different literary genres, I'll just say that "Quartered Safe Out Here" was-in its own unique way- as hilarious, if not more so, than the best of the Flashman novels. The difference is that in the Flashman novels, Fraser's obvious respect for the sacrifices and achievements of the British soldier had to be viewed as a backdrop to the foreground humor while the opposite is true in this work, where the humor plays a supporting role to his tribute, which is explicit.
5-0 out of 5 stars George Fraser's Excellent Recounting Of A Burma Grunt.
This book had been brought to my attention by the author John McKinna ("The Sen-Toku Raid" and others) when it was learned weboth had been combat infantry. And a great recommendation it was. The name of the book was taken from a Rudyard Kipling phrase in "Gunga Din", and outlines the infantryman's life during the final days of WWII as the Black Cat Division pushed down the Burma road towards Rangoon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Memoir of "The Forgotten Army"
George MacDonald Fraser, best known for his Flashman novels, and, in my opinion, one of our best writers, gives us here his nearly fifty-year-old memories of his service in Burma in 1945.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" for international travelers
The Treasures And Pleasures Of Thailand And Myanmar: Best Of The Best In Travel And Shopping is an absolute "must-have" for international travelers looking to obtain quality goods or souvenirs from Thailand at a reasonable price. Intended as a supplementary resource and not a general-purpose travel guide, The Treasures And Pleasures Of Thailand And Myanmar focuses specifically upon obstacles, negotiation techniques, and tips and tricks for those interested in shopping for everything from gemstones to textiles to artworks and much more. From learning how to walk away from the "touts" that try to lure tourists into overpriced stores (overpriced because the store must pay the tout a 10% to 40% commission for the service!), to a step-by-step introduction to the art of haggling, to knowing how to avoid paying thousands of dollars for what might be a cheap knock-off gemstone, to why even the locals may not always obtain the best deals (some shopkeepers can give tourists a lower price than their repeat local customers - who would expect the same bargain every time they walked through the door) to dealing with cultural differences and much more, The Treasures And Pleasures Of Thailand And Myanmar zeroes in on exactly what the money-conscious tourist in Thailand needs to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicately put
An eloquently written piece that will be finished in a few sittings, Suu Kyi's Letters from Burma is a collection of short essays she submitted to the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shinbun.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than just a book !
This is not just a book.Along with Aung San Suu Kyi's two other major books ("Freedom from Fear" and "Voice of Hope"), this book is destined to be at the heart of the struggle - and eventually the victory - for democracy in Burma.Among the three, this is the one I found most wonderful.Vivid, direct, it makes the reader feel as if she/he is listening to Suu Kyi, with her wonderful Asian voice and Oxford accent.Suu Kyi talks about Burma, about her people, about herself. She tells of the tragedies of her people, in the most natural and serene way, as if she were telling of everyday life - because indeed, this is the Burmese everyday life. She does not inflate things, she does not push for her views, yet she reaches the reader's heart immediately - at least she did with me !She simply expresses views and feelings along with plenty of thrilling facts and anecdotes.I can't imagine of any reader who won't love this book and won't feel inspired by this account from Burma's heroine. After reading this and the other books, I felt so close to Burma's struggle that I absoliutely had to go there and meet Suu in person. So I did, I took off for Burma and managed to meet her.I had met many world personalities before, but this was truly a unique event in my life. The pages of the book kept coming back to my mind, as I could finally see the source of all that strength and hope, the incarnation of Burma's struggle. In the end I was deported from Burma for having made contact with her.Now these books are my inspiration to keep fighting on for democracy in Burma in all ways I can.

4-0 out of 5 stars great read
As this book is a compilation of 52 letters written to be published as a weekly installment in a Japanese newspaper (each 2 or 3 pages long), it is an easy book to pick up when you have a few minutes.(In New York, wewould call it a great subway read - you can read a letter or two betweenwhen you get on the subway and when you have to get off.)The letterscombine Aung San Suu Kyi's political beliefs and accounts of the remarkablework of her political party (the National Democratic League) with vividdescriptions of Burmese culture and countryside. There are probably otherbooks that focus solely on either the politics or the culture of Burma thatdo a more comprehensive job of describing it, but this seems like a greatintroduction to both. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Aung San Suu Kyi
The best writing I've ever read ... about striving democracy in peace... I love That Woman!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The eloquent voice of an often forgotten but mighty land
I re-read this book shortly after Aung San Suu Kyi was placed, once again, under house arrest in 2003. The daughter of the man who is referred as the founding father of Burma(today called Myanmar) - Aung San - is herself a major political figure in her country. The chapter about her father - who was assassinated when the author was two years old - is an impressive, informative, and dispassionate account of Aung San's days as a student leader and his leadership of the independence movement that established modern Burma as a nation. My own father was a foreign correspondent in Burma in the late 1940s and had covered the assassination of Aung San and his colleagues. This left me since my childhood with a deep curiosity about this period of Burmese history - and Aung San's daughter's account does not leave curious readers like myself disappointed. Most of the book is devoted to the life and times of Suu Kyi herself. It includes several articles by other writers who help readers understand how a Burmese woman rises to national prominence in a country which has known but unbroken military dictatorship for decades. This book is also about Burmese culture, religion, and language, and should be on the bookshelf on anyone who has a serious interest in this curious, wretched country of tremendous unfulfilled potential.5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
This book was for me an opener into the evolution of Burma's political scene, and it proved to be a good one. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
An awesome book.Far more than just history.Read this book, it will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Principles and soon to be a major movie
The book--a true story--has incredible principles even though it is not well written. It was hard to put it down. The author showed how creativity could spring forth amidst horrendous cruelty, starvation, and isolation when military prisoners of war forsook their own selfishness and began help others. It not only saved their own lives, but because it gave purpose to their otherwise hopeless situations, an environment was fostered that gave true hope and purpose in their existing situations. TO BE RELEASED AS A MAJOR MOVIE DECEMBER 6TH 2002 IN LA.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gospel Lived Out
The book traces the transformation of the author's life and the life of the Japanese POW camp in which he was incarcerated. It is a beautiful book. The Japanese created an environment in which each prisoner lived for himself in a desperate struggle to survive. As a result, life was cheapened, prisoner stole from prisoner and many lost the will to struggle to live. Then, as if from no where, isolated acts of great courage and sacrifice arrested the camp's slide into hell.Men began to ask the question if there was some purpose to life beyond self.Groups formed to discuss the question. From that emerged groups who began serving others. The answer they discovered was that Jesus Christ had suffered much like they were suffering and yet was able to serve others and ultimately die for their sin.The camp was transformed. Men used their talents to serve their fellow prisoners. It is an incredible read.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The real Heroine of the Shan State
Inge's story gives the insight of the aftermath of the military coup. It is difficult to find out for the new generations of Burma on how Ne Win actually treated the Shan Sawbwars and the foreigners. I couldn't stop crying when I was reading about the arrest of Hsipaw Sawbwar and Inge's survival in Rangoon and her dangerous escape. I also could not stop admiring her courage, love and she is now regarded as one of my heros. A must-have book for Burmese and Shans.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tragedy and Hope
Like another reviewer, I must confess that I was a student at the Boulder, CO school where Inge taught German classes. While I was not her student, my friends were. Never once did they let on about Inge's previous life.5-0 out of 5 stars An unbelievable story
I must begin by admitting some bias as Mrs. Sargent was also my German teacher in Colorado in the late 70's.She never gave any indication of her previous life in Burma, nor of the tragic events that ended that life she knew.It is a powerful story of courage and perseverence.I would highly recommend this book and am anxious to read it again! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Flawed But Excellent
Let me first say that both volumes in the Bloody Shambles series are excellent and far superior to ANY other text on the subject of air warfare in the first six months of the Pacific War that I've ever seen.
4-0 out of 5 stars invaluable for the historian
Christopher Shores is an international treasure, a man who has made it his task to suss out the truth about aerial combats in far corners of the globe, usually with the assistance of a fellow historian or two from the countries most involved. In this particular case, he is one of the few who have accessed Japanese records, and he compares them with Allied accounts on a day-by-day basis. This is great stuff, especially for those of us who already know something about the campaigns. My particular interest is the Flying Tigers of Burma, and I was delighted to have Shores's version, especially since he gives equal time to the RAF squadrons that fought alongside the AVG. But I confess that it took a great deal of concentration for me to slog through the Philippines campaign, about which I knew very little. So my conclusion is this: the more you know already, the more you will learn from this account. -- Dan Ford

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Shores/Brain Cull
This book, yet another in the wonderful series of air war accounts done by Christopher Shores and Brian Cull is a great review of the early air war in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Shores and Mr. Cull use interviews with the participants as well as the actual unit reports to bring an idea of the constant struggle that the air war represented. Rather than being dry, these books are easy to read and a great resource. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The True Heroes
"Last Man Out", by H. Robert Charles is a non fictional story about the author being captured in a prison camp in World War II. This book is the story about Robert Charles, who was a marine machine gunner aboard the USS Houston which was sunk by the Japanese in Sundra Strait, March 1, 1942.Robert swam nine hours until he was picked up off the coast of Java by the Japanese. He was held captured for forty three months in slave labor camps in Burma, Thailand, and Saigon. The Japanese had forced the prisoners(Americans, British, and Australians) to build a 262 mile stretch of railroad, from Burma south into Thailand, through some of the worst parts of the jungles. Through all of this torture, a doctor, Dr. Henri Hekking, saved the lives of more than 250 Americans, including the author. He saved them by the knowledge of herbs that grew wild in the jungle. Then something that will help these men survive happens. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not all true
The author tries to create the illusion that he knew my grandfather real well. In fact they only met on a few occasions. My grandfather, Henri Hekking, was a stickler for detail and was disturbed by the fact that theauthor "recalled" conversations between them that never occured. The "death railroad" was a very traumatic experience for alot ofpeople and the events should be exposed, but people who glorify themselveson others heroics are bothersome to me.Overall the stories are portrayedvery well but I feel they have been "over-enhanced" for betterbook sales. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Official, but honest biography of Mountbatten.
Philip Ziegler was Mountbatten's official biographer. However, he claims in the preface to the book not to have been subject to any censorship, and given the frankness with which he acknowledges his subject's flaws, one can believe his claim.Mountbatten was a close relative of the British royal family; Prince Philip is his nephew, and he regularly referred to Queen Elizabeth as his niece; and he was also a close confident of Prince Charles. He was quite ambitious, and not above using his royal connections to advance his military career. How successful that career was is open to some debate. There is no question about his physical courage -- indeed, he may have had too much of it.As Field Marshall Mountgomery enjoyed pointing out, Mountbatten had three destroyers sunk under him during the early part of the war.Later, he oversaw the Dieppe raid, which was one of the worst fiascos of the war -- a large commando raid on a fortified port resulted in near elimination of some units by German forces composed in many cases of file clerks and cooks. This loss did not stop his career, however; he ended the war with the command of the Burma theater, where he seems to have performed well. After the war, he became the last British Viceroy of India, with the task of working out a peaceful transition from British rule. That was a failure, as hundreds of thousands died in riotsbetween Hindus and Muslims. The Muslims could have been forgiven for suspecting Mountbatten's neutrality; his wife was carrying on an affair with the Indian leader Nehru. Mountbatten was no saint in these matters, and could hardly complain.Mountbatten was murdered in 1979 when the IRA put a bomb on his boat. Why they did this has never been clear.Mountbatten had never been involved in Irish affairs, and at almost 80 years of age played no important part in the Government.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insight of Burma under Juntas
The book can provide an insight of Burma under military rule.5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and useful
Cristina Fink's book Living Silence: Burma Under Military Rule is a hard-hitting examination of what life was (and perhaps still is) like under the repressive rule of the Burmese military. Using an extensive set of interviews, and the underground writings of dissidents, Fink outlines and looks at the real psychological consequences of years of repression. Perhaps the closest real world example of what Michel Foucault would call a "carceral society". Fink brings the Panopticon to life. My understanding of the issues in Burma was greatly enhanced by reading this book and I recommend it highly.5-0 out of 5 stars A world apart...
This book takes one to a country that is "a world apart" in a multitude of ways from what we know here in America. A fascinating read that is sure to captivate and enrich the reader with newfound knowledge and awareness. A brilliant debut by an author I hope we'll see much more of in years to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading
Mr. Hilsman's story begins with his life prior to enlisting and moves a little slowly to finally reach the action portion of the book. Still, the story is quite entertaining. The early background of his family and experiences of youth are good character-building for what follows. I had expected more action earlier on in the book and I thought it took a while to get to that part of the book but overall it was a good story. If you are looking for the action, skip the first few chapters and get right to the part where he joins the OSS.If you enjoy getting to know your character, stick with it through the beginning and you will be rewarded with sharing his adventures in the end.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best "Shorter" Introduction to the War in Burma
Although this is not one of the more famous books on the war in Burma, it is one of the best and covers nearly all of the war with tolerably good writing and extant reference and use of first-hand experiences from the British and Empire soldiers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The making of modern Burma
Very interesting concise history of Konboung Dynesty'd last days. The author did explore the in depth and wrote in a perspective usually failed to look into. As a knower of Burmese history and culture, I appreciate the Author's work very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars essential for understanding Burma
This is a good history book.It provides the reader with a fairly broad background history of Burma (describing traditional (ie 18th and early 19th century) society, culture, religion, politics, etc) , then narrates in a straight forward way what the author describes as the country formative transition to the modern world - the nineteenth and early centuries, when the region which we now know as Burma was created and annexed to the British Indian empire.4-0 out of 5 stars a certain perspective
This is a good history and the author obviously knows his stuff. The author's access to British records is exemplary and his knowledge of local sources and tradition is excellent. One problem - he does not see Burma's imperial domination of its neighbors as in any way problematic, while Britain's imperialism obviously is. This is contradictory and typically Burmese. If one is to look for sources of current problems, certainly Britain's inmperial rule is one of them, but so is Burma's refusal to acknowledge that it practiced - and continues to practice - the same sorts of policies over other militarily weaker peoples. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vinegar Joe's story finally told
With a colorful name like this you would think he would be better known for his role in WWII.Vinegar Joe Stilwell was slated to be the Commander of Allied forces in the North African campaign.Unfortunately for Vinegar Joe that was not to be and the job ended up going to Eisenhower.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Vinager Joes Story"
For anyone who is interested in a little known theater of WWII. This is a well written and fact filled read. Primarily the story of Gen. Joe (Vinager Joe) Stilwell. In an arena of larger than life names,Merrill, Wingate, Mao, and Chian Kai-shek, Gen.Stilwell`s story pull all the elements together in an way that, a telling from other angles might not. As my first book on this subject, I feel Mr Webster gave me my money`s worth in a book that was hard to put down.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good solid read if you're a fan of the genre
Overall I'd say this was a pretty good book as a historical war record. It shines the light on an oft forgotten theatre in WWII and dissects both the political and military aspects with clarity.Even as a self-professed WWII history buff many of these details were not known by me.So, for that I'd have to give this book high marks simply for the depth of information on this mostly unknown piece of WWII history. The background on General Stilwell is of particular interest as the man who stubbornly ran the war against all odds.Stilwell's army constantly faced a multitude of diseases, lack of supplies, horrible climatic conditions and a relentless enemy and the book covers these in detail, from dysentery to flying supplies over the "hump" to first hand accounts of Japanese banzai charges.Handcuffed by U.S. military planners and General Chiang Kai-shek policies, Stilwell shows his mettle and does a superb job of getting things done with the little resources he had available.I found it especially interesting that the author notes that Gen. Stilwell had first been selected to lead the D-Day invasion of Europe, but because of his unique qualifications he was chosen for the Burma-India theatre with Eisenhower instead leading the invasion or Normandy.Could we perhaps have had a President Stilwell if he had overseen D-day and not Ike?Some of the guerilla warfare with details of firefights was especially engaging. At times however the book did bog down and get a bit dry with all the "logistical" details and I had to slog my way past that. But, in the end it was a satisfying book.If you're a history, military and/or political science fan, then this book is right up your alley. If you only have a general interest in the topic, I'd probably recommend you pass. ...
