5-0 out of 5 stars The water trade
This book is the heartrending story of a Japanese child prostitute. She was sold by her family at the age of 8 to a sex slave trafficker, shipped to North Borneo (port of Sandakan) and forced to work in the sex business at the age of 12, even before she had her first menstruation.
5-0 out of 5 stars What is a Life?
Sometimes when reading or thinking or, simply, being direct witness to the casual cruelty that God is so evidently fond of, we feel a small bubble become loosened in the vicinity of our inner soul and, rising andexpanding, it reaches surface and our faces spontaneously contract and oureyes fill with tears and we must sit quietly for a moment and, in my case, wish that we could smash that God squarely in it's hellish face. But itpasses and we are again back in the normal universe where we understandthat things just are. The reader of this book has more than one opportunityfor such experience. The slightly elitest tone of the author does notdetract but, somehow, offers some hope that we may grow up. Thetranslation, as well as I can judge having lived only four years inHiroshima, is superb.

3-0 out of 5 stars Captivating, but lacking in a few aspects
This book is not just for reading -- its forte is viewing pleasure. The 400+ magnificient full colour pictures depicting the biodiversity of the Malaysian region enthralls and captivates, the only deficiency being thatsome of Sarawak's ( East Malaysia ) prominent tourist destinations weregiven insufficient coverage. There were pictures of the Orang Asli,orang-utans and various other flora and fauna indigenous to the region, butthere was scarce mention of the Lambir Waterfalls and the Niah CaveSystems, which, in my estimation, are absolute wonders ofnature.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No title
I really enjoyed this book.Sardar gives a history of Kuala Lumpur told against a background of Malay proverbs and fables, and a good narrative of the political happenings in Malay politics of recent years. His descriptions of KL are right on, and the thorough understanding that the author has of Malay culture really enhance this book.Very readable and well-written.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mix of urban history, malay legend and contemporary politics
In the guise of a book examing the growth of Kuala Lumpur(KL), the author explores Malay legends and stories for what they show about national culture, as well as discussing recent Malaysian history up to Anwar Ibrahim's show trial and imprisonment. For an outsider with some knowledge of Malaysia, the book is excellent, and challenges many assumptions about Malaysia, and its current leadership. I suspect, but do not know, that its treatment may be superficial for a more knowledgeable reader, ... Read more
