1-0 out of 5 stars The Mayan Calendar
The reviews here certainly have a wide range of critics. Just one thought. It's my understanding that things didn't end well for the highly advanced Mayan civilization sooooooo.... my question is... Why the heck would we want to model/listen to/heed advice from ect..., like, anything after them? Again , Just a thought.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a total puzzle
What bothers me about most of the reviews of books on Amazon is that they are written by staff of some publishing houses, whether for or against the book. They are mostly not written by readers. Just look at the time and effort put into writing some reviews.
1-0 out of 5 stars had high hopes but was let down
I couldn't wait to get this book in the mail. After reading it I could have waited. I was really disappointed in the material. I found it to be about 5% information and 95% interpretation. This book was written by a Swedish Christian. That means that both Sweden and Christianity were largely the basis for that 95% interpretation. This book, despite the 'official' review, is nothing more than 'the end of the world is coming and so is the second coming of Christ' book. More specifically, 10/28/2011 is the end of everything we know today. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard by which to measure all others
Tho' I was "just" wanting to be informed before my brief trip to Mexico, it was a joy to read the Michael Coe book, & immerse myself in this rich history of the Mayan people. It made my visits to the ruins so very much more rewarding than a tour book could ever begin to do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
Excellent book i love it, is very compresive also include excelent information about the maya culture like the most great cities and the development of the great culture

3-0 out of 5 stars Maya archeology
Over three quarters of this book is spent on describing cities and artifacts in a long list. This is probably what Maya specialists are interested in, but I would think that a book with this title should actually try to write the history of the Maya and not just present the archaeological evidence of it. The book finally changes to a more interesting way of presentation towards the end (long after the chapters which judging by their title should have dealt with the different time-periods in Maya history), but up to that point it's pretty tough going for someone who's interested only in a larger view of Maya history. ... I agree that the older hard cover is my favorite. But the newer set is still wonderful. The cards reach out and ignite symbols held in my memory that are univeral and archtypica in nature. The information is poetic and allows the right brain to flow into a new way of seeing the universe. In this time of great transformation it is a must.As a professional psychic I use this deck every day with my clients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mayan Royal Rock Stars
This is a must read for anyone interested in the ancient Maya and why their advanced civilization that had achieved so much under such harsh conditions suddenly collapsed and disappeared for parts unknown. Demarest argues that the collapse was political rather than the most widely accepted paradigm that it was ecological. He concludes that the collapse was due to a proliferation of royal elites competing for power, similar to the present situation in Saudi Arabia.Warfare between these competing elites caused a collapse during a 100 year period that resulted in a depopulation of major cities and a drastic reduction of palace and temple construction. The book is worth reading if only for Demarest's description of the Wizard of Oz type power structure where Mayan royal elites held power through fantastic ritualistic displays that captivated the masses. He describes the Mayan royal elites as a combination of rock stars, evangelical preachers, and circus performers that dressed in elaborate costumes with feathered head dresses, lit fires with pyrite mirrors, and engaged in public displays of blood letting.Demarest even relates the Mayan architecture totheater with temples high above plazas where the masses could observe rituals. The book is easy to read for layman. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book: A "MUST BUY"
-- *VERY* COMPREHENSIVE; an excellent book: A "MUST BUY"
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the amature Mayanist!
This is a great refereance book for the amature Mayanist. "Gods and Symbols" is filled with specialized facts, covering subjects from Olmec to Aztec times in good detail. It is readable for both beginners and experts. Theamount of information can be overwhelming at times; it therefore is useful to have some background knowledge beforehand to be able to place facts in a larger contextual framework. However, the book's intent is to be a refereance work so this should be expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Already a classic
One of THE definitive reference works for everyone even remotely interested in the cultures of ancient Mesoamerica, "Gods and Symbols" well comprises the most important as well as more specialized facts, covering all its subjects from Olmec to Aztec times in the same amount of detail. Its written to be accessible to both beginners and people more firm with the subjects, and certainly offers more than enough for both groups. However, although the cross-references are fine, the encyclopaedic, culture-jumping approach makes for a somewhat fractured read, and the sheer amount of information can prove overwhelming at times; it therefore could be useful to have some background knowledge beforehand that can help you place facts in a larger contextual framework when you need to. However, this hardly is a reason for criticism given the books intent, and it doesnt stop it from being a highly readable standard work I can unhesitatingly recommend to just about anyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Take this book on your next trip to Riviera Maya!
Mr. Hinsdale has penned an excellent travel guide for the Riviera Maya (The Carribean coast line of Mexico), the heart and soul of which is Playa Del Carmen, at least for those looking for something more laid back than the high rises and high octane lifestyle of Cancun. In spite of the rapid growth along this coastline, Playa has managed to retain much of its sleepy, beach bum charm with a very international flavor. The guide is packed full of usefull information for the travler along with an extensive listing of dining and lodging options to fit most every budget. Included are plenty of pictures that give an idea of what to expect when you get there. The guide also gives the traveler plenty of ideas for adventure and fun, from touring ancient ruin sites to cenote diving with good descriptions of each of these adventures (you'll run out of money or time before you run out of things to do!).All the needed contact information is included. The guide books side boxes also make for fun reading. These are gray colored boxes located on almost every page that are full of interesting information and or fascinating facts about the area.I had fun just paging through the book and reading these side bars.If I had to find one fault in the book is that its coverage of the ruins sites, while adequate, does not give much depth; so if you are planning any extensive visits to the ruin sites I would pick up a guide covering those sites. For the casual traveler this book will be sufficient.I would Highly recommend this guide to anyone headed to Riviera Maya. The authors love of this place is evident along with the joy he gets from sharing it with others!(And if you are looking for a fun beach read check out my thriller novel "A Tourist in the Yucatan!") ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!
I had only a limited interest in the Maya until I got this book, and now a new world of understanding has opened up.Sharer provides a text that is at once detailed and professional, but also accessible and well-written without the dull, dull, report-style of most serious works on the subject.I have spent literally weeks perusing the book, and I seem to always find something new and interesting. Also worthy of mention are the abundant illustrations and photos. Finally, Sharer is to be commended for his intellectual honesty and objectivity - without fail he reviews the merits of the most important interpretations about a historical issue before making a non-binding judgment of his own. This is one to have in your personal library.Very well done indeed!

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs some TLC from a good editor
This book seems to hold lots of promise when skimmed, but when I actually sat down to read it, I got bogged down in it very quickly. The first chapter seems like an extended foreword. The author makes some references to his travels in Central America, and some anecdotes from his travels might have livened things up quite and made the book more engaging, but no dice. The author seems to repeat himself a lot to no apparent end, and, most frustratingly, he does not provide a big picture before starting his slow slog through the details.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is like "Bible" for all "2012"
JMJ is briliant writer, even if i am not native English speaking, it is clear and fine to read it. Clear facts, perfect notes, great apendixes. You will return to it during your "2012" study. Checking the facts with other writers. JMJ have great own criticisms, so he point in text to ideas which are not clear and forward the reader to other sources to make own decision and present few of the major ones. I like this style, when autor find mistake in his own research and in next book he reflect and learn from it, make and explanation why and so on.
5-0 out of 5 stars *****
John Major Jenkins generously wrote an appendix to my book Tranceformers: Shamans of the 21st Century, that really added a remarkable confirmation to my contact with a "dead" optics physicist colleague, and his telepathic communication to me about our End Time scenario. Indeed it was his scholarship that forced me to seek my own scientific answers to these spiritual questions: Does God Exist? Who are we? Why are we here? Where are we going? After immersing myself for 15-years into the academic disciplines of astronomy, biology, computer science, genetics, mythology, physics, psychology, medicine, sacred geometry, and theology, did I finally find the Rosetta Stone that deciphered ancient visions into modern wisdom--as had John Major Jenkins but only many years previous to my musings. I learned from him that we are becoming fifth-dimensional beings of light with third eye open, telepathic, psychic solar powers. That, moreover, I saw too now what modern astronomers define as Solar Cycle 24, ancient Mayan (and Egyptian) astrologers called shaman-priests portrayed symbolically as the Eternal Return of the Sun of God. That the End Time is our golden window of opportunity for transformation between the Venus transits of our Sun in June 2004 and June 2012. Although his book is extremely uplifting in tone, I describe the visions that I have been given to share with my readers with respect for our need to prepare for the "shift of the ages" and the overwhelming natural disasters to come. A runaway violent and weird weather oscillation cycle that vacillates between global warming and global cooling with Super Oceanic Storms that these thermal tug-of-wars will generate worldwide. Also explained is the melting of the polar ice caps by increased galactic and solar radiation inputs to the core of our planet, triggering the eruption of previously dormant undersea volcanoes. This process will slowly build in intensity as Jenkin's knows too, as gravity wave movement coincides with the earthquakes and tsunamis that will be devastating our coastlines in the USA--and elsewhere around the globe as in Indonesia in 2004. I in fact saw that the eruption of Mount Rainier will be part of this lengthy list of geophysical change events as electromagnetic "symptoms" leading to the North-South pole shift quickens. Notwithstanding these sobering events, Maya Cosomogenesis 2012 is not about doom and gloom forecasts. My insights are simply the result of having my third eye opened to our "flexible" future, given that enough of us awake and create our world anew. At a minimum, John Major Jenkins has written a fact-packed intellectual survivor's guide and provided a map for all of us sojourners planning on surfing knowingly into the Age of Aquarius: The Water Bearer of cataclysmic yet miraculous Earth Changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide
This book is perfect for anyone interested in herps in the Maya Forest. Complementary to Campbell's field guide, but also includes great line drawings, range maps, and characteristics to distinguish from similar species. Also, better photos than in Campbell's guide. If I were to buy one field guide for the area, I'd choose this over Campbell's.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptionally well laid out field guide
A Field Guide To The Amphibians And Reptiles Of The Maya World is a comprehensive survey of the crocodiles, turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs, toads, and salamanders found in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. This exceptionally well laid out field guide allows the easy identification of all native and introduced species of amphibians and reptiles of the region; is enhanced with 180 color photographs and 180 drawings; provides valuable techniques for field identification; includes a glossary of herpetological terms; and for each species gives a full description, natural history, and geographic distribution information (complete with maps). There are suggested readings for those who want to know more about a particular species, even descriptions of the most characteristic vocalizations of the reptiles and amphibians surveyed. A Field Guide To The Amphibians And Reptiles Of The Maya World is a "must" for any personal, professional, or academic library collection of natural history and herpetology reference works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great edition of an essential world text - lots of helps
The Maya did not divide their everyday lives and religion. In fact, they didn't have a religion in our sense at all.Their everyday lives were bound up in visions, stories of the heavens, earth, past, and future that were not separate from the reality of their everyday experience. This book, the "Popol Vuh" means Council Book. That is, it is a book for the Lords to consult. One of its other titles is "The Light That Came From Beside the Sea".It is a document of the Quiche Maya who lived (and still live) in a portion of what is present day Guatemala.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Work of the Americas' Greatest Civilization!
I cannot heap enough praises on this book.Bravo!
5-0 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on: Even More Definitive?
The "Popol Vuh," written in a Mayan language but a European script, is the most substantial surviving account of the Maya view of their own history, including that of their gods and divine ancestors, and has presented a host of problems for translators. The Tedlock translation of 1985 added new information to the work of many distinguished predecessors, and made substantial parts of the narrative clear (or at least much clearer).

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
This is by far the best guidebook to Cancun and surrounding area out there. The depth is incredible; the authors mention somewhere that they stayed in Cancun for two months, and it shows. It's not just Cancun either - the coverage of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, the Mayan ruins, and all up and down the coast is excellent. The problem with some guides (Lonely Planet, Frommers, etc) is they "take sides" - they're either too cynical about "gringos on vacation" or totally ignore anything that's not sold in a package. The Moon book really showed both sides: from beaches and nightclubs and five-star restaurants, to museums and Mayan ruins and street food. (Real culture in Cancun - who knew??) There's also good suggestions for people traveling with kids, another complaint of mine about some guides. We got all the R&R we wanted, plus a few things I didn't expect. Moon isn't a well-known name, but this book is worth getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used to be a loyal lonely planet buyer, until I got my hands on this book. The maps, detail, and recommendations were spot on, from the restaurants to the accomdations to the activities. The only time that we had anything other than an excellent meal in Cozumel was when we went to a place recomended by someone in the hotel, as opposed to what was recommended in this book. The detail on each location is very informative.I took three guidebooks with me to Cozumel (fine, I admit it, I am guidebook obsessed), and next time I would take nothing other than this one. In fact, based on this trip, I would pick a Moon guide every time I travel. The section on the Mayan ruins was especially informative.I took the book's recomendation to travel to Coba instead of Tulum, and I was not disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows just why they're called the Magnicent Mayans...
This is the best book I have ever come across on Mayan culture. It is a oversized coffee table volume, some 450 deluxe pages, each of which is covered with maps, illustrations and many, many photographs. Each period in Mayan development is covered in the chapters and the illustrations correspond neatly with the text. The text also does not veer off into the author's own opinions as these books frequently do.The first evidence of humans in the Mayan planes date to around ten thousand b.c., the book starts there and continues to the current Mayans (yes, their descendents alive in the world today, and that, too, is an interesting look). For anyone who thinks that civilization began in the Mediterranean, this book is clear evidence that it began on the other side of the world at the same time, if not earlier. It's a shame that the price and the fact that this book is out of print makes it less accessible to readers. For Mayan historians, this book is a must, but even someone with only a casual interestin the subject would find much of interest here. ... Lujan's book delivers knowledge of a most elusive subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Knock out!!!
I've read this book and I swear it is watching me as I read it. I consider myself a stalker of spirit and have realized this book's spirit stalks me. Or is it the personal power of Lujan Matus that has reached through and touched my life?
5-0 out of 5 stars Most relevant Castenada spin-off to date
Though pricey I sprung for it, it's pretty intense and a slow read [must read slowly]. You should spend a day on each page or paragraph.

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful photos !
this book has gorgeous photos of Guatemala.
4-0 out of 5 stars Documentary photography
I bought this book for my girlfriend who is going to Guatemala for an 8-week field study for her master's degree in anthropology. The pictures are in no way artistic photographs, I would classify them as documentary photos. There are a few that have some drama or depth to them, but most are simply documenting the Guatemalen culture through thier famous colorful weavings and how they use them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
I bought this book for my family as we are adopting a child from Guatemala. This was one of the only books with pictures of the culture that I could find, and I am SO glad that I did. I can be rest assured that my son will feel pleasure and pride in his birth-country after looking at the pictures in this book. It is a beautiful, colorful, and rich culture that deserves to be displayed vividly for all to see! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lords of Creation review
The Lords of Creation is a marvelous book filled with full color photos of Mayan art objects and sites. It has some objects not seen before in other books. The Metro Art Museum in L. A. has put this book out and is following up with a traveling tour this year. Fist stop is in Dallas (June -Sept) and then goes to New York.I am making plans to go.This is going to be very spectacular, as the book is. I highly recommend this book for all serious Mayan and Mesoamerican buffs whatever your studies or intrest range happens to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Finest Book on Mayan Royalty and Its Influences on Culture
Few museum exhibitions have garnered as much conversation and genuine interest in history as thecurrent LACMA sensitively curated exploration LORDS OF CREATION: The Origins of Sacred Mayan Kinship. This book is termed a catalogue, but in fact it not only enhances the magnificence of this exhibition and the importance of this aspect of Mesoamerican history, it also provides wholly readable essays by a gifted staff of writers that assures this volume will become a part of every school library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Book to Tell the Real Story About Maya Shamanism
As a person who has traveled in places where the modern Maya live--Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico--and who has taken the trouble to get to know what the history and culture of these admirable people is reallylike, I have always been appalled at the number of books that claim to beabout "Maya shamanism," but are really just New Age claptrap. While it is true that MAYA COSMOS does not read like a mass-marketpaperback, it is one of the most heartfelt, well-researched, and stunningbooks on the Maya that I have ever read.If you want the REAL story on whothe Maya are and how their spiritual and cultural beliefs have evolved overthe last 5,000 years, this is the book for you. Yes, there is somescientific data and research here, but I would rather a thousand times readthat than the silly cultural misinformation written by dozens of New Ageauthors who project their own interpretations onto the art and the citieswithout even being able to read the very texts they are claiming tounderstand. The late Linda Schele was one of the five major figures who wasresponsible for cracking the code of the Maya language. As an arthistorian, she was well versed in the complex and fascinating symbolism ofMaya culture. David Freidel has been a brilliant Maya archaeologist forover 25 years, and first became involved with the culture because of hisinterest in shamanism. Joy Parker, who, by the way, was the ghost-co-authorof A FOREST OF KINGS (check out the Acknowledgements and the Forward whereher work is credited) has spent over a dozen years working with the modernMaya (most recently, as an editor of Maya shaman Martin Prechtel's SECRETSOF THE TALKING JAGUAR and LONG LIFE, HONEY IN THE HEART) and with otherindigenous cultures such as the North Native Americans (check out her bookWOMAN WHO GLOWS IN THE DARK) and African cultures, so she brings a specialpersonal interest and flair to this project. The first-person stories toldin this book are priceless. I spent as many pleasurable hours reading it asI did the authors' first effort A FOREST OF KINGS. If you truly want tolearn about the history of the Maya, the tragedy of the Spanish conquest, and how the modern Maya find the strength to endure, this is the book foryou.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner
I have to admit I didn't get more than halfway through this one - no way is this written for inquiring minds who aren't already versed in Mayan lore.5-0 out of 5 stars Archeoastronomy of the Maya
The authors present Mayan archeoastronomy in a very readable and absorbable form.Compare the astronomy/astrology/ myths and stories of the Maya to other cultures of which you are aware, and you will see that thisbook presents a valuable contribution to world archeoastonomy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ***** An Apocalyptic Anthology on 2012 *****
The Apocalypse is "the exteriorizing of our soul and the interiorizing of our body."--Terence McKenna (1946-2000) 4-0 out of 5 stars Milton
I have to agree with a couple of the other reviewers that this bookhas a lot of material that would be difficult to verify; however, I read this book shortly after reading a book by Mark Vidler, called "The Star Mirror," which is based on information that even a 14 year old could verify, and found that both books really added alot of color to eachother.I wouldn't have really cared for this book on it's own, but believe it's perpective is unique enough to add to a greater picture of (possible) upcoming global and cosmological events that would be of importance. It is good, but only alongside a few, more scientific, books to make you feel you are reading something that COULD have some validity, rather than more new age speculation.

1-0 out of 5 stars What are you looking for??
The book has scientific value, but distorts findings to makeconclusions. If you are searching to fulfill yourself spiritually, this is not a book for you.You can make peace with your God, whichever religion, by simply listening to your soul...However, if you love pseudo-fiction sci-fi, eat this book up - its a buffet! ...
