1-0 out of 5 stars CAVEAT: Victor Hanson is NOT a "military" historian.
Victor Hanson is NOT a "military" historian. Hanson is an excellent classical historian - but not a "military" historian. Unfortunately, he has been passing himself off as a "military" historian for years without challenge. After 28+ years of active duty military service, and a personal library of more than 1000 rare ans standard military titles - I find Hanson's "military" analyses highly flawed, shallow, and amateurish at best - and that is exactly what I find again in this book. One should read Hanson for his classical historian abilities - but not for his "military" analyses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons to Learn
I consider myself very lucky to have found this book right after reading Barry Strauss' history of the battle of Salamis. This work provided me with the subsequent history of Greece after a brief moment when all Greeks were united at Salamis in 480 BC under the brilliant and sly Themistocles to repel the vast Persian hordes and huge naval fleet of the King of Kings, Xerxes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Organization sets it apart from other histories
Probably the most striking aspect of this book is the way the author chose to organize the history of the war into categories:

3-0 out of 5 stars Thin and disappointing
Golly, but I feel like the odd man out here. Other reviewers have praised this book highly. To me it was thin in content and pretty uninformative. Maybe there's just not a lot to say about the historical Trojan War. Thus most of Strauss's narrative is a paraphrase of Homer. It is full of silly sidelines like "An unbandaged would might have been a common sight in the Greek camp." As my son would say: "Duh!"
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on historical speculation on the trojan war
Mr. Strauss does a great job bringing the bronze age art of war to life.He references many existing sources and some new ones, such as a newly discovered papyrus that show Greek soldiers of the era (The papyrus was stored away in a museum only to be recently discovered. . .makes you think what else is hidden away and lost to us on some dusty shelf). However, I have always been a little leery of a work of fiction being used to exemplify historical knowledge. However if it get people reading about history I can live with it. If this is what MR. Strauss was after then he has accomplished his task.I recommend this book to all historians, lovers of Homer's works and wargammers who would like to recreate the battles of the Iliad.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Victorious Review
Because of my interest in classics, I was delighted to hear the interview with Barry Strauss on NPR when I was in the car several weeks ago. I ordered his new book right away and have just finished reading it.His scholarly and entertaining account is appealing because his informative descriptions of ancient times are clear, clever, and catchy. How I wish I could be a student in one of this fine professor's classes! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unchristian
Dalrymple's 1994 reenactment of the 6th century Christian spiritual journey of John Moschos and Sophronios is fascinating, and its author a compelling writer. There, the value of this book ends.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book transcending itself
A trip through the Middle-East is most of all getting to know the Muslim world. The part of its' history from Byzantine times, meaning the presence and history of Christian settlements,is easily forgotten or at least figures in the background only. After having read this book the Middle-East will never be the same to me again. With the exception of the Armenian genocide,I was hardly aware of all tragedies which happened but most of all: which are today still happeningto the very old Christian communities of these countries. Not only are they in permanent danger of being killed, often with no punishment of the perpetrators from the authorities, and have they already been driven out of places where they lived since a 1500 years, also their ancient buildings, art, manuscripts, possessions of huge historic meaning, are being destroyed. As these communities and their material heritage represent much of the roots of Western civilization, this loss is a huge loss for the history of mankind. What's going on is a complete annihilation of the wonderful mosaic of different civilizations this world once produced. As since many years but now more than ever the Middle-East is the focus of world politics,"From the Holy Mountain" should be read by a much wider group of people than lovers of good travelogues or lovers of these countries only. A most important and readable study, implicating a plea for tolerance and respect, it should be a must-read for all politicians in the world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Zeal For Ecclesiastical Arcana
Yes! My title nabbed from the Amazon reviewer. Dalrymple's journey through the middle east, retraces the Byzantine traveller-monlk, John Moschos, author of, The Spiritual Meadow'. In the late C6th, accompanied by his pupil, he set to gather the wisdom of the desert fathers from Mt Athos, to Kurdisatan, then south through Syria, the Lebanon, Palestine, and on up the Nile. Dalrymple's trip in the early 90s was frought with tensions which today would cause an angel trepidation. The book was a revelation to me, filling in considerable gaps about the foundation and correlations of so many parties in the fermenting region. Muslim fundamentlists provide stiff opposition to Dalrymple's historical and current enquiries. But they are not unique in this. His evocation of place is crisply poetic and touched with memorable detail. His feel for people is very sympathetic. A work justly applauded. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference
The Oxford Classical Dictionary (OCD) is a wonderful reference for people with a keen interest in ancient Greece and Rome. It contains brief articles on almost every imaginable aspect of ancient Greek and Roman history (including thematic entries), by scholars who are specialists in their fields. The entries are informative yet concise, and provide a good starting point for further study through cross-referencing and mini-bibiographies.It is probably the most useful to students, but the short articles are written in such a way that non-specialists will not feel left out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Oxford production
I received the first edition as a prize in a library contest back when many of the people who appear in the OCD were still alive -- when you could actually feel the print on the pages. It has served this classist well these many years. The second edition seemed a bit boring -- one could but wonder, why the effort? Hence, I was a bit wary of the "new & improved" 3rd edition, though I have long respected Hornblower's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars But why the new Revised Edition
The Second Edition of the OCD was published in 1970; the Third Edition was published in 1996. Now we have the Third Edition Revised published in 2003. So why the revision of the third edition? No one seems to be able to answer that. If there were mistakes made in the 1996 edition why is it still for sale?Don't get me wrong I have used the OCD for about 30 years and it is a great tool, but it makes one wonder why the revision? Research in the Classics is moving at such a pace to warrant a revision. So as one who has all three I feel a little cheated by the Oxford University Press. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Possession For All Time
Thucydides understood the importance of the events he both witnessed and took part in and for that reason he understood why others should know about them. It is quite remarkable to think that twenty-five hundred years later, Thucydides's account of the Peloponnesian War is still being widely read. But I suppose that's natural considering his account provides so much of the fairly limited evidence we have of the events of that tragic period. We can be thankful for his foresight and appreciation of educating those of us who came much later.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Landmark Thucydides
This is the Crawley translation with some modernization by the editor, Robert B. Strassler. I won't presume to say that it is the best translation; I have also read others and Crawley's is, in my opinion, at least very good. However, the other features of this edition make it excellent. Victor Davis Hanson's introduction is thoughtful and helpful. In the margins of the translation, Strassler has summarized each section of each chapter of each book. Every two or three pages, there is a map showing in detail the area, cities and other land and island features Thucydides refers to in each chapter or section. I find this to be very, very helpful and unique to this edition. Also, the eleven appendices, each written by recognized scholars, cover a number of helpful and interesting topics (e.g., Athenian Government in Thucydides, Spartan Institutions, Land and Trireme Warfare in Thucydides, Dialects and Ethnic Groups, Currency and Calendar and Dating Systems). Therefore, I highly recommend the Landmark edition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but prolix
As far as utility goes, this is a very good place to start for anyone who is interested in learning about the peloponnesian war directly from the primary source himself, Thucydides. The book is filled with maps and footnotes in almost every page, so that you'll never find yourself needing to look into an atlas in order to figure out what the heck is going on with who and where (a problem I had the first time I read the History).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
An enormously engaging and highly explanatory work which details ancient greek religious beliefs and the works of the major playwrights and poets alike. What is of particular interest is how Gods and the stories of Myths of Gods and Godess's helped to explain the surrounding world to the people of the time. What is remarkable is these stories really were the first kind of documented evidence of humanity making sense of it's exsistance, purpose and meaning. A phenomena which has been occuring in revised and multi-cultural forms ever since.
5-0 out of 5 stars Are the gods still with us?
Seeing the recent movie "Troy" (twice) sparked my reading Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey" (Lombardo's translation). But Homer left gaps, assuming his audience was familiar with the mythology. Buxton's book very nicely, comprehensively and entertainingly fills in those gaps. It's fun to read or just peruse by itself, or as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging, entertaining, and memorable reading of the classic work
Ably translated and expertly narrated by Stanley Lombardo, Iliad is a flawlessly recorded, complete and unabridged audio presentation of the timeless and classical Greek tale of the Trojan War ascribed to the blind poet Homer. Enhanced with an introduction read by Susan Sarandon, this audio book edition of the Iliad fully captures the epic nature of this story of an ancient tragedy. A "must" for school and community library audiobook collections, this Parmenides Audio 12 CD, 15 hour edition of the Iliad is enthusiastically recommended for all listeners searching for an engaging, entertaining, and memorable reading of the classic work. Also very highly recommended as translated by Stanley Lombardo and featuring equally insightful synopses from Susan Sarandon, is Homer's Odyssey (1930972067, $42.00, 10 CD, 12.5 hours, unabridged, Parmenides Audio).

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlike anything ever recorded
I had studied Greek history for quite some time before I finally did myself the greatest favor thus far in my life and purchased Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War for my collection. At the time I had already read Herodotus at least 3 or 4 times in full, along with all sorts of other Greek texts available.I was in love with Herodotus, enjoying with skepticism his regaling of myths as fact, particularly the presense of oracles and their relation to the events he described, which still fascinates me in spite of the doubt I feel towards divine intervention. At that point I had known of Thucydides at some time, but it was not until I had exhausted almost every available source of Spartan knowledge did I at last turn to him.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, cruddy translation.
Thucydides is a top-notch ancient historian, although he can be a bit dry at times. In fact, this may be part of what makes him such a great historian; he says in the beginning that he's concerned only with the facts and pretty much sticks to that for the whole history. Whatever the case, it's important for a translation of his history to not end up sounding too dry and provide the reader with some geographical and historical background.
5-0 out of 5 stars A non-scholarly review.
I really have the feeling that I am not knowledgable enough about the period in question in the Thucydides to provide any kind of reasonable context for the work. Instead, this review will focus on some reading tips and reactions aimed at the more generalist reader who may be attempting to get through the text.

3-0 out of 5 stars A challenge to read.
I'm probably 1/3 of the way through the book and slowing.I don't think this book is for everyone and that is why I'm giving it 3 stars.I've found the book difficult to read for the following reasons.
1-0 out of 5 stars Description is misleading
The Amazon description says Vol. 1-3, boxed set, hardcover. That is all true. What they don't tell you is that there are actually six volumes. The box in which it comes is clearly marked, "Volumes 1-3 (of six)."That would have been a much better description for Amazon to have used.If you have volumes 4-6 and you are looking to complete the set, this book is for you.If you are looking for the complete set, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Historical Work
Gibbon's "Decline and Fall" is without a doubt one of the most well-written and truly comprehensive historical works concerning the Roman Empire. From the military maneuvers of the northern legions to the intrigues of the Imperial Court, Gibbon showcases the history of Rome as it unfolded--often relying on the eyewitness testimony of contemporary writers to give readers a sense of the passions and policies of the time. There are a few minute problems--or rather gaps--in Gibbon's work, but given that he originally published in the late 1700's we can excuse his lack of complete information.Overall, an excellent read and a great history of such an important subject. ... I'm not going to review the book itself, just point out that this is, if not the best, one of the best editions of Herodotus' Histories available in the English language. You can't go wrong with this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly readable!
If you like greek history, but you are not a scholar, then this is the book for you.Like all the other reviewers say, this book is like a time machine, it takes you back to ancient Greece, Phoenicia, Persia, Lydia etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars The 'Father' of History.
( This is what we are used to call him. Of course Herodotus is not the Father because History existed already long before he was born. The Father of Written History would be more accurate).

4-0 out of 5 stars What do the Linear B Tablets say about Mycenae?
For those who have read "The Decipherment of Linear B" also by John Chadwick, detailing how Michael Ventris (with the assistance of several other scholars) deciphered the Linear B tablets found at Knossos on the island of Crete, "The Mycenaean World" will be a welcome companion book."The Decipherment" was mainly concerned with the actual process used in decrypting the tablets; "The Mycenaean World" is Chadwick's valiant attempt to interpret the translations and apply them to what is already known about the Mycenaean World from archaeological evidence. Most interesting is Chadwick's take on the mysterious fall of Mycenaean civilization. He suggests everything from natural disasters, foreign invaders and internal political strife to explain why Mycenaean Greece went into decline, descending into the Dark Ages.An interesting, though scholarly, read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Biography
I enjoyed reading "Alexander the Great" by Paul Cartledge, Greek History Professor at Cambridge University. Alexander the Great is among (if not) the greatest soldier in recorded history He achieved stunning military and political success in his short life. The book is structured thematically, which I found interesting and has good illustrations of battle lines, maps, glossary, bibliography, among other things.
5-0 out of 5 stars What the movie doesn't tell you...
An overview of the military conquests of Alexander the Great whose campaigns spread the influence of Greek culture into modern civilization. This is more of the story that wasn't shown in the 2004 movie. Once you learn more of the real Alexander you will truly wonder why Colin Farrell was cast as him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would You Serve in the Phalanx for Alexander?
I read this book just before seeing Oliver Stone's film Alexander. This is a highly readable book, as are all of Paul Cartlegde's works. Most of the criticism I've seen of this book is off the mark, I think. What is most valuable about this biography is that the professor is extremely rigorous in sifting the historical record, which is mainly secondary, and the archaeological record in searching for the great Macedonian king. This is neither a hatchet job nor a paean to Alexander's virtues--Cartledge offers a balanced analysis of the source material and an examination of the authors from which they sprang. That is why he does not take a chronological path in this excavation of the historical record; his project is not to tell a story but to examine the record and hypothesize a psychological profile of the conqueror. For rigor alone this book gets five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cahill's Erudition is a Pleasure
Most educated people have some idea about the important contributions the Greeks have made to Western Civilization. We usually learn of their deeds in a hodge podge fashion. We learn about Pythagoras in Geometry Class or Socrates or Plato in an Introduction to Philosophy class. We know the Greeks are important but most of us know this in a scattered sort of way.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Unconvincing
I thoroughly enjoyed the author's earlier work on how the Irish saved civilization. But this book was a disappointing compendium of Greek myths, legends and history that never reveals a plan behind the book.Taken in its subparts, many sections are engagingly informative in an elegant if sometimes pretentious prose.Yet the author ambles from here to there in a disjointed narrative with interesting nuggets but little insight.Where's the big picture? The author attempts to wrap it up at the end with a sentence about the Greeks' "variety of human response, lightening quick transmutations, resourcefulness, and inexhaustible creativity."
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read, but...
Not as concise and tightly written as Cahill's other works on Judaism, Christianity and the Irish. Not a bad starting point on the Greeks, yet seemed confused and disorganized at times. Still, many bright spots and certainly worth a look and 4 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource.
Walter Burket's "Greek Religion" is an intense survey of Hellenistic religious beliefs from their earliest Minoan and Mycennean antecedents. This review will summarize the material contained within the study, extrapolate the central themes of the text, and finally shall offer an analysis of the text with regard to its presentation of data, use of archaeological and primary sources, and its intended audience.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reading the book is a devotion to Athena
Burkert leaves no stones unturned in this survey of Greek religion.Everything you would want to know about religion is covered here.Topics include the manifold origins of Hellenic religion; a detailed discussion of the innumerable divinities who constitute the actual focus of the religion; cults, rituals, sacrifices, temples and the like; and finally the impact of the philosophical schools. As a reference and research material it is currently second to none.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Handbook
Burkert's Greek Religion is the perfect handbook for any serious student of archaic and classical Greek religion. 5-0 out of 5 stars History of Greco-Persian War
As the title of my review says, this book is a very well written history of the whole war, not just Thermopylae. The reason I stress this is that when I first read this book, I was disappointed since I had just read "the Greco-Persian Wars" by Peter Green, and had picked this one up hoping to get more detailed insights on the battle at the pass as the title suggested.Alas, t'was not to be.Apparently, Green's history pretty much covers everything this one does, and in pretty much the same way. Both books even draw similiar conclusions when evidence is scanty. This happened so much that I was suspicious at first that one was basically paraphrasing the other.Don't misunderstand, you can't go wrong with either book, but if you have one, there is absolutely no reason to have the other.Which one is better? They both cover the same ground in the same chronological order. They're both about the same length. Green's book MAYBE goes into SLIGHTLY more detail while this one may be a TAD more fluidly written, so flip a coin.
1-0 out of 5 stars Iran
This book is true super exaggeration of how great were the Spartan. History could not deny the fact that the King of kings Xerxes was defeated. However, even after defeat Greek had to pay tribute to Persian/ancient Iran king/s. The Sparatn won the battle by mere luck of throwing a rock and hiting the main commander. As a result, Iranian army lost their command and had to retreat.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine book for the general reader
After reading Peter Green's book on the Greek-Persian Wars I decided to read this book to learn more specifically about Thermopylae. What I found is a book that basically tells the same story that Green told only simplified and more for the general reader than academic. The title is misleading as several other reviewers have noted. Although given the fact that there are few known facts about the battle, this is not surprising. It has also been my experience in dealing with publishers that is sometimes the publisher and not the author that selects the title.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Citizen
Kagan's Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy is an extremely well-written book on a remarkable statesman who lived nearly twenty-five hundred years ago. The historian Thucydides called him Athens's `first citizen'. During his thirty years of near dominance as that city-state's leader, Athens enjoyed great wealth, a democratic form of government, and gloried in the arts and building projects that reflected that city's heightened status. Kagan's defense of Pericles (though not without criticisms) and the form of government he helped implement are admirably and ably argued.
5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to know Pericles
Donald Kagan of Yale university is perhaps the foremost authority on Periclean Athens in the world today. As such, it is only natural that he should write a treatise on the life of the great man known as Pericles.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Churchill of the Ancient World
When I was just a youngster I remembered reading about the "Golden Age of Pericles". What was this "golden age"? Who was Pericles? What impact did he have on the world today?

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!
A marvelously written, intricate weave from an incredible array of sources that illuminates the significance of Greek appetites (especially for fish -- yes, fish -- and for sex, in multiple forms and layers) and attitudes toward them, and thus, on the way, as it were, what was regarded as virtuous, that the author convincingly shows were central to social, philosophical and poltical life in classical Athens. An extraordinary book offering amazing insights. One awaits the next set of revelations, if there are more to be delivered to us, by Mr. Davidson, with something resembling opsophagia.A tour de force!

3-0 out of 5 stars brings the ancient world to life but tough to finish
The best part of the book is how it brings the ancient world to life. What did these folks do day-to-day?That said unless you're doing an academic thesis on this topic you might lose interest halfway through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for classicists
While I would grant that this is a scholarly work by a serious historian I found it an engaging read and quite fascinating. It is one of the few books I have read that really helps one get into the mindset (mentalite) of another civilization, far distant in time and space.I don't think one needs an encyclopaedic knowledge of ancient Greece to appreciate this book but some exposure to other studies of mentalites might be helpful. ...
