5-0 out of 5 stars It actually works.
So often Books which claim that by reading them you will be able to achieve this or that, fall far,far short of their claims. "Healing with Ki-Kou:" does what it say's and Dr. Li Xiuling is to be congratulated on her book. I have recently been told I have angina, so I bought the book. I practised the breathing exercises and angina pains I get shortly after getting up in the morning, no longer occur. Thats after 4 days practice. Similarly, the angiogram I had recently went so much better because as the procedure was carried out I practiced the breathing exercise and was totally relaxed. The book is easy to follow and the diagrammes are quite adequate for the purpose.I can only say that by breathing as she recommends your health will be improved and that must be a bonus to anyone. I recommend the book whole heartily, no pun intended.Old Bill

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

After having a miscarriage at 8 weeks, and having waited for that pregnancy to happen for 12 years, I found comfort in researching as much as possible about dealing with the pain of my loss. Finding this book has made me realize why I have had so much trouble getting pregnant to begin with. It is easy to read and has a step by step explanation on how to apply the Ancient Chinese Medicine and methods in your life-style to be successfully pregnant... naturally. I strongly recommend this book to anyone in search for the "infertility cure". ... Read more

Editorial Review

Fifty years of scientific archaeology in the People's Republic of China (PRC) have redefined early Chinese culture. This handsome volume surveys some of the most spectacular recent finds and their role in reshaping the history of civilization in ancient China. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., teamed up with Kansas City's Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to organize a second extravaganza of unburied treasures, emphasizing discoveries made since their last show in 1974. The more than 175 objects from four historical periods and in numerous media represent important early sites and a diversity of cultures located outside the central Yellow River area--most notably in the south and southwest regions, like the state of Chu. The range is vast, from roughly painted pots about 6,000 years old to lovely clay and marble figures modeling the courtly fashions of 1,000 years ago. The excellent photographs and short texts on individual objects and their excavation sites describe their artistic and historical importance and prompt readers to savor individual artifacts over broad sweeps of history. Linger over a unique pottery basin painted with diagonal lozenges; an over-life-size bronze figure and related heads with strikingly geometrical features; various fantastic creatures in bronze and jade; lacquer bowls and silk garment fragments that have unbelievably survived the centuries; and polychromed Buddhist deities that reveal details like blue mustaches and eyebrows. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book and a big bargain
The paperback edition is unbelievably priced at less than $20 for 584 pages of high quality paper with every photo printed in full color. The editorial reviews says it all. But I just wanted to add that looking at the diversity of artifacts (many of which look surprisingly strange) in the early periods of China's history further I'm further convinced that the modern Han people came from the merging of many ancient cultures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work.
I'm a Chinese and I was fancinated by it when I was working as a visiting scholar at a Canadian University. I couldn't help buying it for myself when I came back to mainland China later. It's a little expensive to buy it from here, but it's worth it. For me, this book is the most comprehensive and objective history work about modern China that I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Crafted, comprehensive and accessible
Probably the most useful, one-volume history of Ming and post-Ming China.Well crafted with appropriate profiles of many of the leading players.
5-0 out of 5 stars the standard by which to measure others
I teach history in an International Baccalaureate public high school in San Diego California. After trying several other texts I have always come back to Spence for my class and my students.Every year some students come away from the unit lost and dumbfounded but more come away excited and intrigued. The chapters that we use from 1911 - 1980 are awesome for our studies which focus on the Cold War.The thoroughness of the research and preciseness of the narrative are awesome examples of historical methodology in them selves.Spence's compelling analysis on top is simply icing on the cake. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worsley Followers Pay Attention ...
Unschuld is a scholar, a genuine translator that doesn't leave much to the imagination. His understanding of the cultural contexts (as there are many) in which TCM grew are un-matched in terms of written text.Get his books, if not for the honest look he takes at TCM, but for the fact that his works are the bread and butter of TCM.The gross ignorance of the classics among so called "Doctors of TCM" in the western world is amazing.Don't guess about TCM, either learn to read Chinese or get good translations of the classics. Not pocket translations at a American grade five reading level. If we expect people to view us as Doctors, we should study like one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Milestone
This book is a milestone for those of us who wish to understand Chinese medicine. As others have noted, this is not a translation of the Su Wen, but a thorough commentary. I consider it a necessary introduction before attempting to read the translation. Once Unschuld's translation is released, I will feel more prepared to grasp the meaning behind the text. Unschuld is an expert in this field and I'm not sure what a previous reviewer meant by self appointed. I think his experience, education, previous works, and position as director of his academic department speak for themselves! If you wish to go deeper into your understanding of the medicine, buy this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Contradictions of Misunderstanding
Robert Feld is welcome to embrace Unschuld's highly scholarly, hard to read, disjointed text. My primary point is that this is NOT the Nei Jing, it is not the text, it is not readable as such, and it is not a guide for would-be doctors interested in practicing based on Nei Jing. That much should be more clear in the description of the book, but it is not. It should be called "Essays on Nei Jing."Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars read Dagyab Rinpoche's Buddhist Symbols in Tibetan Culture
It's a more interesting and authoritative reference for this subject matter. This is due to Rinpoche being a qualified (I emphasise the word 'qualified') Lama and Tibetan scholar. Also at no point does Rinpoche compromise Tibetan Buddhism by giving away restricted information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'Wonderful' Encyclopedia of Tibetan Symbols and Motifs!!!
I love this book. Having found it a few years back at a tattoo shop in Santa Cruz, California, I was only able to look at it for a short time but I was able to gain so much knowledge as to the wealth of designs and deep meaning found in Tibetan art. This book stayed in my mind thereafter. Here it is a few years and a couple tattoos later and the book resurfaced on Amazon. Great price, great condition and prompt service. This book is great for one who has interest in Tibetan art and it's symbolic nature. The concepts are well articulated and with each 'type' placed into a different chapter it makes refrencing quite simple. If you are interested, get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sun-Tzu: The Art of War (Classics of Ancient China)
This is an excellent translation of the various known texts including some of the more recent archaeological finds.Ames' preface also provides a valuable context for the writings - historical, cultural and philosophical. His insights into the Chinese culture, both past and present, prepares the reader well for the subsequent translations. The distinctions between western modes of thought, with their deep divisions between the physical and spiritual, are contrasted with the Chinese philosophy of continuous change within all extant things. For them there is no dichotomy - everything is defined by their roles and the ability to understand reality and truth as it is.Also, while I cannot read Chinese, it was cool to have the original writings provided for all the translations.Even if you've read the translations before, this book provides an excellent update to a literary/philosophical classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sun-Tzu: The Art of War, edited by Roger T. Ames
This is the translated version that also includes the original Chinese text. Hence for the reader who can read traditional classic Chinese, one can truly appreciate what Sun-Tzu had achieved. His work is a masterpiece of scholarly literature as well as a demonstration of his military geniusness and insight.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book review
I have not read other translations of Sun Tzu's "The Art of Warfare,"...in fact, I have not read anything by Sun Tzu.Thus, I had a huge sense of anticipation as I embarked on the legendary text. Yet, I must confess that I was also not expecting much, given that this was a translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive introduction to ancient Chinese history.
Volume is in English but has excellent Chinese characters (Hanzi) along with Hanyu Pinyin for Chinese terms.Very comprehensive summary (with photographs) of ancient Chinese History.Only thing missing is a .pdf version because this volume is heavy and difficult to travel with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
I waited a long time to buy this book, being somewhat daunted by its enormous price. When I finally ran across a copy on the used market for a reasonable sum, I picked it up.I could not be more pleased. The quality of the scholarship is sensational, the illustrations are superb.I was especially surprised at the extraordinary volume and quality of the illustrations (albeit all black and white), since I was expecting straight text. There is nothing out there in English that approximates the sophistication, charm, or scholarly depth of this volume.Don't be dissuaded by assertions that it is a difficult read; to the contrary, this is a very accessible and addictive text, even for those with little familiarity in the area of ancient Chinese history.3-0 out of 5 stars Now I finally had a chance to read this

The correct title of the book should read Tantra in Practice (Princeton Readings in Religions) by David Gordon White (Editor), Beavis and Butthead.

1-0 out of 5 stars The choice of topics misses the heart of tantra
I would not recommend this book since the choice of topics enfogs the subject rather than illuminating it. This collection does indeed have some excellent contributions from leading scholars, but it is the whole package that is disappointing. I was also disappointed with White's own contributions.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Dao that can be described is not the real Dao
As an acupuncturist and MD I am certainly interested in ideas about how acupuncture works. But I do not expect someone to tell me that his view of acupuncture is the 'true way' or therefor all other ideas about acupuncture, including the 'meridian' idea and the 'energy' idea are wrong. And that is exactly what Donald Kendall does.

"Why does anyone care whether Chinese anatomy and physiology are explained as energy flowing through meridians, or by the circulation of blood, nutrients, other vital substances, and vital air (qi) through the vascular system? The answer to that lies in the moral obligation of every practitioner to provide each patient with the latest medical understanding available. The need to continually search for the truth is the most fundamental principle of science and medicine... Research so far shows that the true concepts of Chinese Medicine operate under known physiological principles, involving the complex organization of the neural, vascular, endocrine, and somatic systems, sustained by the circulation of nutrients, vital substances, and oxygen from vital air."
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW- The Best English CM Book in At Least a Decade
I'm an acupuncturist, AND an author who puts Chinese medicine (CM) into layman's terms (see PulseMed.org).One of the most difficult things to explain is "What is qi?" and it's not fun responding to objections that Chinese medicine is unscientific or even occultic.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile in Spite of the Hype
I've done various exercise systems over the years and I'd say this one is far beyond all others in terms of giving a workout to the fingers and wrists, major sources of stress in the computer age. It is also a very methodical system, going step by step; for example, one exercise involves the legs, the next adds arm movements, and then another integrates breathing and visualization.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish every Chinese could read this book!
Having grown up in mainland China, having read most of the Chinese history books available, and having steeped with all comtemporary arts and media propaganda as well as serious scholar works, I thought that I have a full grasp of the modern Chinese history until I read this book half through, of which I bought the fifth edition several years ago but collecting dust on the book shelf.I could not help to wait the finish of my reading of the whole book but to write this.So far, this is a book I read with such fascination better than reading any book in my life, including those page turner best seller fictions. Originally I picked up to read this book as some kind of obligation to read those books I bought but never opened, following my successes with those Hemingway and Mark Twain, and pessimistically planned to spend the rest of July to finish it, and this was only three days ago and I'm already half through. When I read this book for the past few days, I cannot help to notice the connections between the events in the past and those events more recently. For example, Kang You-Wei's reform and four modernization; Tai Ping Tiang Guo and the lang reform of the 50's; the list goes on.Overall, I highly recommend anyone, especially those of us oversee Chinese from mainland China, to read this book.I will be anxious to know whether any attempt has been made to translate this book into Chinese so that every Chinese could read it.Not knowing the difference between the fifth and the sixth edition, I would offer a suggestion to consider for the seventh edition:to add a list of Chinese for those names used in the text, since it's very hard to remember all the names in the out dated old spelling, in addition to correspond each with the correct Chinese name.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic- indispensable!
I recently took a course on the history of modern China in university, which covered the era spanning from the late Qing to 21st century. Initially I was rather daunted by the size and thickness of this book, but I ended up reading this book 3 times by the end of the course because it was so readable. Immanuel Hsu's analysis is clear and obviously up to par. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is taking a similar course. If you're keen to understand China particularly in the light of current affairs, you need to know about its recent history as well. There is no better place to start than with "The Rise of China" by Immanuel Hsu.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work by one of the best scholars of Modern Chinese History
This is the best single-volume history of Modern China that you could own.It covers thehistory of China from the Ch'ing (Qing) dynasty to the emergence of China as a global superpower at the beginning of the 21st century.Scholarly, yet immensely readable. This work will remain a lasting memorial to Professor Hs, a preeminent scholar of Modern Chinese History, whom I had the great privilege to know. ... Read more
